“Yanyan!
“Let’s talk about it. I don’t want the Gu Enterprises; it’s all yours now. I know that I owe you a lot, but I won’t care about Lan Yazhen anymore from now on, alright?” Gu Jingkui pleaded.
Qian Yan walked back and stood in front of him. “The company is rightfully mine. You gave up your shares for Lan Yazhen. Whether you care about Lan Yazhen or not from now on is not any of my business, and you’re free to do whatever you want. If you want to pack your things, you can do so at any time.”
“Yanyan, can’t you forgive your brother just once?”
“I gave you so many opportunities. You didn’t take any of them.”
Gu Jingkui was in shock. He stood there and watched Qian Yan’s retreating figure.
Gu Jingkui returned every day after this but never got any chance to speak with Qian Yan again. However, he failed to receive Qian Yan’s forgiveness and finally chose to rent a place to stay. He also didn’t end up packing up his belongings from the Gu family’s house.
One day, Gu Jingkui received a call from Lan Yazhen. She was crying, and she sounded very sad. She said that her father had gambled again, and they now owed money again. That was all she said, and she didn’t ask him for money. Besides that, she just kept crying. He knew that she was waiting for his next move.
Gu Jingkui advised her to sever ties with her father, then hung up the call.
Not long after, though, he received another call, this time from Lan Yazhen’s father. He said that his creditors had taken Lan Yazhen away.
He still didn’t pay it any attention. Soon, he received a video of Lan Yazhen. In the video, she was tied up, and her captor gently scratched her cheek with a knife. A small trail of blood appeared on her cheek.
In the video, her captor threatened him. If he didn’t pay up, her captor said, then they wouldn’t mind doing another live broadcast for him.
He had no choice but to compromise and send the money they demanded.
“Yazhen, you’d better leave your dad. I really won’t be able to save you next time,” Gu Jingkui said. “My family has severed ties with me, and I have no more money now. I really can’t do anything to help you after this.”
Lan Yazhen didn’t believe what Gu Jingkui said. Even though Gu Jingkui was not in charge of the Gu family anymore, she was still Gu Qianyan’s brother. She believed that he just had lost feelings for her and didn’t want to treat her nicely anymore.
Meanwhile, Gu Jingkui found himself a job to survive on. He went to the Gu family’s house whenever he had time, hoping that he’d somehow win back his sister’s forgiveness.
Half a year later, Lan Yazhen was in trouble once more. Her father owed money again to someone. It was difficult for people who were addicted to gambling to truly leave the habit.
“I have no money,” Gu Jingkui told Lan Yazhen’s father over the phone. “I’ll call the police.”
“You can’t! They’ll kill Yazhen if we call the police,” Lan Yazhen’s father anxiously answered.
“Then there’s nothing I can do,” Gu Jingkui said.
“Mr. Gu, you should seek help from Miss Gu. After all, you are siblings…”
Lan Yazhen’s father’s words were cut short by Gu Jingkui, who angrily responded, “I’ve already disassociated myself from the Gu family, not by choice, but because my sister doesn’t want me anymore. I have nothing left. What more do you and your daughter want?”
“Yazhen is in such a pitiable state. She’s been talking about you constantly lately. I never thought you could heartlessly watch her suffer like this. I must have misjudged you,” Lan Yazhen’s father said.
Gu Jingkui heard the dial tone on the phone, and he couldn’t help but seethe with anger.
Gu Jingkui eventually decided to call the police for help. It didn’t take long for Lan Yazhen to be rescued, but she had been beaten and was badly bruised.
As it turned out, she hadn’t been kidnapped this time. It all had been a scheme orchestrated by her father, and he was the one who had beaten her.
Lan Yazhen’s father was caught and sentenced to prison. Two of his accomplices, however, escaped.
Lan Yazhen scolded Gu Jingkui for this. She said that everything could be solved through having a polite discussion; why did he have to get her father arrested?
Gu Jingkui had long realized that he was in the wrong from the very beginning. He knew that he had made a grave mistake.
One day, as he returned home from work, Gu Jingkui was attacked. Two assailants approached him with a baseball bat and began striking him. His two bodyguards were trailing far behind him, as per his instructions, and they didn’t react immediately. By the time they subdued the attacker, Gu Jingkui was already left lying on the ground, in pain and sweating profusely.
These two assailants were the same gamblers who had conspired with Lan Yazhen’s father in his failed scheme to defraud Gu Jingkui.
