Jiang Nanshu wasn’t stupid to begin with. She gradually came to her senses.
She pushed Lu Qingyan away, her brows furrowing slightly: “You locked me up?”
Lu Qingyan’s expression remained unchanged, his smile gentle: “How could I? I was worried about you. I’d go crazy if you got sick.”
Jiang Nanshu choked.
He pulled her close again: “Let’s not argue, okay? I regret not answering your last call. I promise I won’t do it again. Please forgive me. I was wrong.”
Jiang Nanshu looked at him silently.
Lu Qingyan was twenty-seven this year. Time had left deep marks on him. Compared to his former sunny and refreshing appearance, he was now mature and steady. His well-tailored suits gave him an indescribable charm. He was handsome, and when his eyes were sincere and earnest, Jiang Nanshu couldn’t help but soften.
That was her decision. If it weren’t for her cold war with Lu Qingyan, she might have stayed a full month, and the outcome wouldn’t have been different.
“I won’t argue with you, but you’d better not lie to me.”
Jiang Nanshu wouldn’t let anyone lock her up.
She would just rest for a few more days.
When her gaze fell on the Buddhist prayer beads on his left wrist, Jiang Nanshu asked, “Where did you get that? When did you start believing in this kind of thing?”
Lu Qingyan glanced at them, too. The sandalwood prayer beads gleamed.
He slightly curled the corners of his lips: “It’s just something to cover up an ugly scar. It’s not important.”
Jiang Nanshu then remembered that he had committed suicide that night.
Overwhelmed by guilt, Jiang Nanshu lowered her head: “I’m sorry, Lu Qingyan.”
She should have said that to him long ago.
She should have apologized for her previous actions long ago.
Lu Qingyan was stunned, then his eyes lit up with a smile: “It has nothing to do with you. It’s all my fault. I was able to hear your inner voice from the beginning, which was why I didn’t break off the engagement. My motives were impure. I wanted to observe how things would develop. I knew you were just playing me, but I still wanted to be the one to take advantage of you. I was attracted to you first, but I was still greedy for your initiative.”
He raised his hand, feeling Jiang Nanshu’s heartbeat, and smiled contentedly: “It’s good you’re back. We’ll never be apart again.”
Jiang Nanshu’s physical condition was always good; after about three days of rest, she had fully recovered.
Lu Qingyan went to the company every day. Jiang Nanshu watched his car discreetly drive out of the manor gate. The heavy, wide gate, like a high wall, only opened for a brief moment, allowing Jiang Nanshu to see outside before slamming shut again after a few seconds.
Jiang Nanshu was trapped in the villa, idle every day. The maids, as if trained, dared not utter a word to her. Whenever she asked about what was happening outside, they would simply shake their heads, as if they were mute.
When she changed her clothes and wanted to go for a walk outside the estate, the maids would neatly block her way: “Madam, the Master said you can’t go out for the next few days. It’s cold outside. You should stay at home.”
It was March, and Jiang Nanshu, wearing a thick sweater, didn’t feel cold.
“Move aside, I want to go out for some fresh air.”
Jiang Nanshu wanted to examine the villa. It had been four days since she moved in, and she wanted to see how it was furnished.
It looked like someone lived there!
