ABFA Chapter 31

Thousand Threads 9

Six of them jogged to the classroom. The first period was “Current Affairs and Policy.” Jiang Yue and Xiang Sui yawned nonstop, half-closing their eyes as they stared at the podium. Not a single word of what Si Xing’an was saying got through to them.

By the end, they couldn’t hold on any longer and collapsed face-down on their desks, completely asleep.

There was no helping it, blastozyme was everywhere in the base. Like coffee, it was addictive, and withdrawal was extremely unpleasant.

Si Xing’an, aware of their special situation, simply turned a blind eye.

Jiang Sen looked puzzled: “What’s wrong with them? It’s like they’ve never slept in eight hundred lifetimes. Even Bai Wang doesn’t sleep as much as they do.”

Xi BoYu sat nearby twirling a pen, glanced at the two sprawled out like dead pigs, and said calmly, “It’s a long-term side effect of inhaling blastozyme. It’s in the textbooks.”

Bai Wang, a longtime narcoleptic, stroked his chin: “Exactly. The only thing that can knock Jiang Yue out like this is blastozyme. She usually sleeps only four or five hours and wakes up full of terrifying energy. Now… finally, she seems like a normal person to me.”

After the Current Affairs and Policy class ended, Jiang Yue and Xiang Sui, still sprawled out like dead pigs, were yanked up by their roommates and dragged out of the classroom.

At noon, they went to the cafeteria for lunch. The Alphas, all wearing muzzles, sipped on fruit-flavored nutritional drinks. Jiang Yue chewed on her straw while tugging at her muzzle.

“This thing is suffocating me! There’s no airflow at all!”

Although the muzzle was annoying, the gaps in the middle were large enough that airflow wasn’t actually blocked.

Xiang Sui, still dizzy, looked up at her: “I don’t feel suffocated, I’m just sleepy. Your aftereffects are way worse than mine. Your constitution is so strong, it shouldn’t be like this.”

Jiang Yue weakly lowered her head and said in a languid voice, “It’s not just that I can’t breathe… I’m dizzy, my limbs feel weak, my steps are light and floaty, and I feel like I’m going to throw up.”

After saying this, she grabbed her throat and vomited with a loud “wah.”

Xi Boyu and Jiang Sen, sitting on either side of her, patted her back. Their heads were slightly lowered, and inadvertently, they caught sight of what she had vomited.

Their movements froze instantly.

A half-digested Thousand Threads lay serenely in Jiang Yue’s stomach acid, roughly the size of a small steamed bun.

Seeing the three roommates across from him staring motionless at the floor, Kuri cracked a joke: “Jiang Yue didn’t just throw up another Zerg, did she?”

As he spoke, he lowered his head to look down.

Then he bent over, and never straightened back up.

Bai Wang set his nutritional drink aside. “You guys have some pretty unusual tastes, staring at a pile of vomit for so long.”

Unbothered, he lowered his own head, and then didn’t raise it again.

Xiang Sui, equally bewildered, groggily looked down as well.

Good grief!

He snapped awake instantly!

Jiang Yue continued gagging and vomited out another tangle of Thousand Threads.

Three or five Omegas came walking hand in hand. Because Jiang Yue had thrown up in the hallway, and because it happened so suddenly, they had no time to deal with it.

The Rose District was full of delicate Omegas, they were sensitive, timid, and easily startled; even a flying cockroach could make them cry.

Thousand Threads was an extremely frightening sight, and the roommates were absolutely panicked, terrified that it might cause chaos among the Omegas.

The finely dressed Omegas’ expressions immediately changed as they avoided Jiang Yue’s vomit. Once they were at a safe distance, one Omega whispered to their companions, “Why is that female Alpha’s vomit pink worms?”

Another Omega let out a squeaky, playful “Ew!” and teased, “Ugh, that’s so gross! You’re actually looking at her vomit? Forget lunch!”

The Omega walking behind them looked away, a mix of subtle sympathy and faint schadenfreude in their tone: “Really, being an Alpha is so miserable. Look at those worms, all stuck on her muzzle, hehe.”

The Omega holding her nudged them and said, “Stop it, that’s gross.”

Jiang Yue: “…”

Xi Boyu: “…”

The other four roommates: “…”

Jiang Yue felt numb.

She used a tissue to remove the Thousand Threads stuck to her muzzle, her expression exactly like Yue Yunpeng’s classic blank stare.1refers to a very well-known facial expression of Yue Yunpeng, a famous Chinese comedian and xiangsheng (crosstalk) performer. His expression, usually wide-eyed, slightly slack-jawed, and utterly bewildered, is iconic and often used in memes to convey confusion, shock, or helplessness.

Xi Boyu looked at her, the corners of his mouth twitching upward, silently trying, and failing, to press them back down.

Jiang Yue stared at him, rolling her eyes toward the sky: “Go ahead and laugh if you want. Honestly, nothing in my life could ever be more humiliating than this.”

“Hahahahaha!!!!!”

The roommates could no longer hold it in and started slapping the table, laughing uproariously.

After leaving the cafeteria, Xi Boyu quietly asked, “Jiang Yue, how are you feeling right now?”

Jiang Yue’s gray eyes had turned into lifeless, dead-fish eyes. Her misty gray irises rolled upward, revealing the whites beneath.

With a soul-searingly blank expression, she stared at her roommates’ varied reactions and said in a hollow voice, “Do you know what the most painful thing in life is?”

Xiang Sui: “What is it?”

Jiang Sen: “When the worms got stuck on the muzzle, was it seen by a bunch of Omegas?”

Bai Wang: “Could it be that you haven’t finished vomiting yet?”

Kuri, horrified: “No way! You’re saying it’s going to happen again?”

Jiang Yue shook her head: “None of that. It’s when you’ve finished vomiting and want to rinse your mouth, but your face is still wearing the muzzle.”

She stared straight ahead, her eyes hollow. “If I am guilty, let the law punish me, not turn me into an Alpha.”

Once again, she went to the medical department. She refused her roommates’ company, walking alone along the path with a desolate air.

She wanted silence.

When did the Thousand Threads get into her stomach?

How had she not noticed at all? Could it be that her body had mutated again? She was terrified of being eaten from the inside by the Zergs, and equally worried that if the medical department discovered some catastrophic secret, they’d send her to the research lab to be dissected.

Going to the hospital was a dilemma, and not going was just as problematic, she truly felt caught in a bind.

Near the medical department was a beautiful greenhouse. Although it was late autumn, the greenhouse was warm and filled with delightful scenery, like spring itself, a perfect place to go when one’s mood was troubled.

A few Omegas were strolling inside, but Jiang Yue, muzzle in place, slipped into a quiet corner. She squatted there with a weathered expression, staring blankly at nothing.

Two rows of tall wooden shelves stood before her, each layer filled with petri dishes.

A black writing board had fallen to the ground. Normally, Jiang Yue would have picked up anything in her way, but her mood was sour today. She simply stepped over it with her long legs.

The petri dishes contained all kinds of fruits and vegetables, an exclusive perk for Omegas. Since Omegas loved fruit, almost every Omega residential area had such greenhouses, providing them with the freshest, highest-quality produce for free.

On both tall shelves, the petri dishes were filled with strawberries, their color vivid and bright red.

The strawberries on one shelf were plump and luscious, while those on the other were tiny little things.

Jiang Yue bent down to pick the biggest one, but because of the cumbersome muzzle, the large strawberry got stuck in the gap.

She felt on the verge of tears.

“Why does even the strawberry have to be against me!”

Sniffling, she had no choice but to stretch out her arm and pick the smallest strawberry from the other shelf, about the size of a fingernail. It slipped through the muzzle and into her mouth, but after a couple of chews, she couldn’t even taste it before it was gone.

Then she had a sudden idea: she grabbed six or seven of the tiny strawberries and tossed them into her mouth one by one, chewing them all together. Finally, it felt satisfying.

Why waste free stuff? Although she was now a 188.9 cm Alpha, freeloading on Omegas’ strawberries felt a bit shameless, but in her heart, she was really just a delicate little fairy of 1.65 meters!

And she only ate the tiny strawberries, leaving all the big ones for the Omegas!

She was very considerate that way.

Everyone knew how terrifying an Alpha’s appetite could be. Jiang Yue kept eating and eating, and before she realized it, she had devoured all the small strawberries on an entire shelf, leaving nothing but stems and leaves.

She smacked her lips, savoring the tart, slightly unripe taste of the tiny strawberries. Patting her stomach in satisfaction, she suddenly felt something inside it moving, like it was jumping.

Oh no! Could it be that the Thousand Threads still weren’t finished coming up?

Sure enough, that nauseating feeling returned. Jiang Yue bent over, unable to bear the sight of the Thousand Threads dangling from her muzzle in the wind. With a burst of strength, she bent the high-hardness alloy bars of the muzzle.

A slippery, sticky thing slid down her throat and was expelled.

On the lush green grass, in a puddle of stomach acid, a red eyeball rolled once, and met Jiang Yue’s gaze.

Gray eyes met red eye.

Both sets of eyes were filled with terror and helplessness.

Jiang Yue was completely dumbfounded.

“Heavens, what is this thing?!”

The red eyeball was wrapped in a layer of milky-white substance. It was clearly terrified, spinning frantically in panic.

Its texture was highly unusual, unlike a human eyeball. It looked extremely sticky, as if semi-dried plasma had solidified, and was filled with milky-white root-like veins. Its pupil was translucent white, slowly rotating like a miniature whirlpool.

Just one glance made it even more nauseating, and Jiang Yue retched violently, heart-wrenchingly.

Plop!

Another red eyeball was expelled by Jiang Yue. This one hit the ground harder, bouncing once before landing and rolling a full one and a half times in the stomach acid.

The newly expelled eyeball looked up, and met a pair of terrifying gray eyes.

Murderous intent!

Instantly terrified, the new eyeball recoiled, stretching out two slender milky-white stalks to cling tightly to the other eyeball beside it.

The two eyeballs huddled together, trembling in the puddle of stomach acid.

Jiang Yue let out another violent retch.

Thank heavens, this time it was over, just pure nausea. Two eyeballs were already her limit; if one more came up, she would have truly lost it.

Summoning her courage, she looked at the two red eyeballs. One glance, then looking away. Another glance, then away again. Repeating this five or six times, she finally gathered the strength to face the grim reality head-on.

She ripped her shirt open with her bare hands. Crack! The T-shirt that reached her waist was torn into a crop top. She tore off a large piece of the T-shirt she had layered beneath, and, suppressing her nausea, fished the two eyeballs out of the stomach acid.

Even through a layer of fabric, Jiang Yue could feel how slimy they were. Goosebumps erupted all over her body, her hair standing on end.

With trembling fingers, she clenched the fabric tightly, threw it on the ground, and stomped on it.

Her size 45 foot, still couldn’t crush the two eyeballs?

Sorry, really couldn’t.

These things were incredibly elastic, any imagined squishing or bursting was impossible. Even with all her strength, she could only flatten them into thin, pancake-like shapes. Yet after a while, they twisted and warped back to their original form, huddling together and trembling again.

Heavens!

Jiang Yue was about to lose her mind. These two eyeballs clearly came from that mutated creature.

Don’t be fooled by their pitiful, persecuted appearance, they were actually far more dangerous than the Thousand Threads or the blue-eyed millipedes.

Should she hand them over to the base?

That seemed like a reasonable solution at first, but on closer thought, it was full of pitfalls.

The base was full of elites, many of whom were well-versed in psychology. In front of these people, most lies would be easily exposed.

Jiang Yue couldn’t cover up a lie flawlessly, nor could she, like last time, knock herself out for a week to avoid the base’s interrogation.

Going to the base would be like inviting disaster. She hadn’t even been in this world for half a year and was still just a civilian without any backing or influence.

She had no real abilities but was guarding a vast treasure trove. Even thinking about it with her toes, she knew exactly what would happen if the treasure was exposed.

The abnormalities in her body could be plausibly explained as a “perfect parasitism”, not something unique or unprecedented.

But the golden eagle incident couldn’t be explained, and now vomiting two eyeballs from mutated creatures was also beyond explanation.

If anyone became suspicious, even the slightest trick could force her to tell the truth.

Jiang Yue thought for a long time. Finally, gritting her teeth, she roughly wrapped the two eyeballs in a piece of cloth and shoved them into the pocket of her work pants.
