“I can say for certain, Lord Shu — Madam Liu was not killed by me.” Mu Feng’s faint smile carried a touch of mystery. “The one who killed her was someone else.”
Shu Qiu asked, “And who might this ‘someone else’ be, young master?”
“Well…”
Before Mu Feng could answer, Qi Yuan cut in coldly, “Isn’t finding the real killer the magistrate’s job?”
Shu Qiu chuckled pleasantly. “Doctor Qi, that’s not quite right. Helping the authorities capture criminals is everyone’s responsibility. How can you say it’s only ours?”
Qi Yuan’s tone was frosty. “When I treat a blind man, I need a pair of good eyes. Would Lord Shu be willing to donate his own?”
“This is not the same thing—”
“How is it different?” Qi Yuan interrupted, his face expressionless. “Aren’t both done for the sake of the people?”
Shu Qiu hadn’t expected the usually quiet man to be so sharp-tongued. After a pause, he decided it wasn’t worth arguing with him and instead turned toward Mu Feng — who at least seemed more approachable — wearing a polite, friendly smile.
“I wonder, young master, do you have any clues to offer?”
Mu Feng replied mildly, “I heard that Madam Liu didn’t have any enemies in her daily life. So perhaps the best place to start would be with the people closest to her. It’s possible… they might know something.”
That was all he said, ending with a faint smile and nothing more.
Shu Qiu realized he wouldn’t get anything else out of him. Even though he knew perfectly well that Mu Feng must know more — after all, the man was someone to be feared — he had no choice but to drop the matter.
“Since we’re done here, I’ll take my leave.” Shu Qiu clasped his hands in salute. “Forgive me for disturbing you, young master.”
“Safe travels, Lord Shu,” Mu Feng replied with a slight nod.
Just as suddenly as he had arrived, Shu Qiu departed with his men.
Once the visitors were gone, Mu Feng glanced at Feng Guang and smiled lightly. “I was beginning to think you didn’t want to see me anymore.”
She hadn’t come by for several days — very unlike the interest she’d shown before.
Of course, she couldn’t exactly tell him it was because she’d learned he already had someone he liked — and that she’d been sulking about it.
After thinking for a moment, Feng Guang said, “I’ve just been… busy lately.”
“What have you been busy with?”
Right — what could a girl her age possibly be busy with?
Her cheeks flushed red. “Busy… losing weight.”
Mu Feng suddenly stood up. He bent slightly, placed both hands around her small waist, and effortlessly lifted her into the air. The move was so unexpected that Feng Guang gasped and instinctively clung to his strong arm, staring at him in surprise.
A charming smile tugged at his lips. “You’re not heavy, Feng Guang. Even a few years from now, I’ll still be able to lift you easily.”
Lift her? This wasn’t lifting — this was practically hoisting her into the sky!
Her young heart pounded wildly. Blushing, she muttered, “Next time you decide to pick me up like that, could you at least give me a warning first?”
Her poor heart couldn’t take it — one more second and it would overflow with pink bubbles, leaving her brain useless except for one looping thought: How can this man be so ridiculously charming?!
Mu Feng’s tone softened even more. “So, does Feng Guang still plan on losing weight?”
“No! No more!” she swore. “I promise — I’ll never try to lose weight again!”
“That’s good.”
Instead of putting her down, Mu Feng adjusted his hold and pulled her gently against his chest. Patting her head softly, he said with warm amusement, “Children are still growing. How could you think about dieting?”
