“Mother, where should we go first?”
The three disguised people swaggered down the street.
“Looking for the slaves.”
Xiao Zimo was stunned, confused by her intention.
An Ye remained silent, following them quietly.
It wasn’t long before they found the slaves’ selling location.
Bei Yutang approached one of them and explained the situation to her.
The chubby girl enthusiastically said, “You’ve found the right person. I have many girls here. If you want to choose a maid, I guarantee you’ll find one that satisfies you.”
The girl glanced at the three of them, seeing that the young girl was the master. However, anyone with a discerning eye could tell that the ordinary-looking woman was in charge.
The girl spoke directly to Bei Yutang, rambling on and on.
“Sister, take us to see the girls.”
“No problem. We just got a new batch, all top-quality goods.”
As they talked, they walked into a courtyard. The girl said a few words to the person guarding the courtyard, and the person quickly left. A moment later, the man returned with a group of girls.
Everyone lined up in front of them.
Bei Yutang glanced at the girls. They had regular features and were good-looking, but they were all rather thin and small, their clothes patched together. It was obvious they were from impoverished families, sold by their parents.
The man kept an eye on Bei Yutang’s expression. From her indifferent expression, he couldn’t tell whether she was satisfied with the goods.
“What do you think?”
“Not bad.”
The man knew immediately that she wasn’t entirely satisfied. However, he wasn’t about to give up.
He enthusiastically introduced her, “Look at this one! She’s pretty and clever, and you can tell she’s a smart girl.”
Bei Yutang looked at the girl he had brought up.
The little girl was quite clever. When she looked over, she cleverly stepped forward and said, “Madam, I can do a lot of things. I can cook, clean, and embroider.”
This was indeed a clever slave.
Bei Yutang had no intention of buying her, however.
Seeing her dissatisfaction, the young man immediately suggested another maid, but Bei Yutang still shook her head.
Her gaze swept through the girls one by one, and when she saw the girl standing at the end, timid and hesitant, her gaze paused.
The girl, about eleven or twelve, was thin and petite, not very courageous, not particularly bright, and even seemed a bit dull.
Bei Yutang didn’t need someone too clever; this one was just right.
“Let’s take her.” Bei Yutang pointed at the girl.
The girl was stunned. The other girls were also surprised, puzzled as to why she had chosen the worst of them.
They didn’t understand the reason, but An Ye and Xiao Zimo both did.
Bei Yutang paid the money and took the man away.
“What’s your name?” Bei Yutang asked.
The little girl hunched her neck, her body tense and stiff, and looked at her timidly.
“Yadan.”
Hearing this name, Bei Yutang suddenly remembered Xiao Zimo’s previous names. ‘Er Gouzi’ and ‘Yadan’ were truly down-to-earth names.
“I’ll give you a name.”
The little girl looked at her without saying a word. She could see her happiness in her eyes.
“Powder-white Daiyu, a beauty of national beauty and heavenly fragrance; beyond the wall, green mountains stretch across the dark green, and in front of the gate, flowing water carries the fragrance of flowers. From now on, your name will be Daixiang.”
The next day, the four of them rode out of town in a carriage.
