This twist on top of a twist left everyone dumbfounded—and Fengguang’s head was just a screen full of question marks.
“I don’t care about men or women. The only person I like is you,” Gu Lan declared with syrupy affection, though his eyes betrayed him with a glance toward Mu Jin.
Mu Jin’s expression grew complicated. She couldn’t even sort out her own feelings. Han Chen had always been the one she admired, yet watching Gu Lan confess to Fengguang suddenly left her feeling strangely suffocated.
“Let go of me.” Fengguang had no patience left for Gu Lan’s games. Her face went cold.
She knew exactly why he’d suddenly changed his tune—it was nothing more than a ploy to get under Mu Jin’s skin. But she was no one’s pawn, and she hated being used as someone else’s tool for provocation.
Gu Lan curled his lips in a roguish, charming smile. “Fengguang, are you just embarrassed? It’s fine. You’re my fiancée. Even if we’re a little intimate, it’s only natural.”
“Intimate, my ass!” Since he refused to let go, Fengguang drove her knee up hard into his most vulnerable spot. The impact was loud enough to make every man in the room wince in sympathetic pain.
Gu Lan’s face went green, then pale, then green again. He tried to hold on to his elegance, but the indescribable pain below the waist made it impossible. His arms slackened, and Fengguang seized the moment to wrench free of his grasp.
“Xia Fengguang!” Gu Lan roared, as if raising his voice could somehow vent the agony.
“What are you yelling for?” Fengguang’s heart raced, but she refused to back down. If she lost her composure now, she’d lose everything. She straightened her spine and stood her ground in front of him.
The sight only stoked Gu Lan’s fury. That kick had been no joke; the pain still radiated through him. Gritting his teeth, he forced himself closer to her. “Xia Fengguang, it looks like you’re tired of living!”
But before he could reach her, someone stepped between them.
“Gu Lan, you’re too worked up.” Han Chen moved in front of Fengguang, his calm smile a stark contrast to Gu Lan’s frantic rage.
“Han Chen, this has nothing to do with you. Get out of my way!” Gu Lan snarled.
Han Chen’s tone remained even, almost detached. “Today is Mu Jin’s birthday. Why ruin the mood? Honestly, whether it was your dramatic confession or your… accidental injury, everything seems to have started with you.”
His words were mild, but when he mentioned Gu Lan’s “accidental injury,” the amusement in his eyes deepened.
Gu Lan was already seething. He knew Han Chen never got along with him—always looking for a chance to play the model student and jab at him. And deep down, Gu Lan also knew Han Chen wasn’t wrong. Everything that had happened tonight had been his fault. But admitting it? That was something Gu Lan would never do.
“Han Chen, Xia Fengguang is my fiancée. I have the right to speak to her—or even take her with me. You don’t.”
