Chapter 39 – The Educated Youth’s Long-Suffering Wife

◎ Responsible men are such a damn pain! ◎

Ming Ming asked, “What’s this?”

Self-Study Series in Math, Physics, and Chemistry,” Yan Junsheng read off the title.

“I know—”

“And here’s high school Chinese, English, politics, geography, and biology,” Yan Junsheng added, laying each book out in front of her like prized treasures.

The sight was so overwhelming that Ming Ming froze for half a beat before blurting out in horror, “What on earth are you doing?”

Yan Junsheng pressed his lips together, as if carefully weighing his words, then said seriously, “I asked a friend to send these over. Do you have any plans for the future? I know this might sound far-fetched, but I believe one day the college entrance exam will be restored. It doesn’t hurt to prepare early.”

Ming Ming’s expression grew even more horrified.

“System! System!!” she screamed inside, “Is this guy a time traveler too? Quick, check if he has a system!”

He grew up in an intellectual family—having some political sensitivity isn’t that strange. You think everyone’s like you? Don’t think I know what you wrote in your Chinese book…

Ming Ming cut the system off. “Alright, dismissed. This has nothing to do with you.”

The system squawked, “What kind of attitude is that? You think you can summon me whenever you want and kick me out whenever you like—”

Ming Ming suddenly said, “We’re about to get into bed. Go put yourself in the time-out room.”

System: “…Screw you.”

Grumbling, it stomped off.

Meanwhile, Yan Junsheng was still talking: “I noticed you bought some textbooks—are you planning to study? You’re very sharp. I can teach you. But don’t get into any of that superstitious nonsense—it gives you a bad reputation. If you ever have a chance to take the college entrance exam, getting disqualified for that would be such a waste.”

Ming Ming’s ears perked up.

He sorted the books neatly into piles. When he got to the Chinese text, he hesitated. “I saw you bought Chinese and politics books before. The politics one is pretty outdated, so you’d better use mine. Chinese doesn’t matter much, you can stick with yours.”

He reached to take away her Chinese book, but Ming Ming quickly pressed his hand down. “Leave it.”

He looked surprised but didn’t argue.

“Do you like the humanities? English might be tough. Do you enjoy math and science?” He figured he should first understand her strengths and interests before planning her studies.

Ming Ming felt like she was back in high school.

She asked weakly, “Do we really have to do this in the middle of the night?”

“You slept all day. You won’t fall asleep right now anyway,” Yan Junsheng said matter-of-factly. “Might as well let me give you a few problems, just to see where you stand.”

“I can sleep! Totally can!” Ming Ming insisted, plopping down on the desk and looking up at him pitifully, eyes full of meaning. In a low, suggestive voice, she added, “Aren’t you going to sleep with me?”

Yan Junsheng caught the hint but only answered gently, “Not tonight. You need your rest.”

Ming Ming wanted to scream that she didn’t need rest.

She could handle it.

Really!

They could even go another round all night if he wanted!!!

But Yan Junsheng, unmoved by her wounded look, quickly scribbled down some problems in a book and handed them to her.

The questions weren’t difficult for her. Even though it had been a while, her senior-year “muscle memory” was still intact. And compared to modern exams, these problems were far easier. Ming Ming breezed through them.

That surprised Yan Junsheng. Even in English—where he expected her to struggle—she answered without issue.

He watched her with delight.

Resting her chin in her hand, Ming Ming twirled her pen lazily. “Yep, just like you’re thinking—I’m a genius.”

What kind of cosmic joke is this? Running marathons in my last life, now cramming for college entrance exams in this one…

The system popped back up. “Yo, still awake? What kind of play is this?”

“Get lost,” Ming Ming muttered, feeling genuine drowsiness set in.

The system drawled, “Isn’t this exactly what you wanted? Didn’t you sneak around buying books just so you could prep for the exam early and change your fate?”

“That’s true, but I didn’t plan to start this early.”

After all, she had no idea when she might leave this world. She hadn’t put much hope into this era’s college entrance exams. Besides, most subjects she could probably cram last-minute. But politics… her eternal nightmare.

Who the hell scores thirty-eight out of a hundred in politics?

“Can I sleep now?” Her eyelids were drooping.

Yan Junsheng exhaled softly, suppressing his excitement. He quickly marked another couple of problems and slid the book back in front of her. “Be good. Just two more.”

Twenty minutes later.

“Good girl, two more.”

Another twenty minutes.

“Be good. Just the last two.”

Another twenty minutes.

“Yan Junsheng!” Ming Ming slammed the desk, finally at her limit. “Two more, two more—first two, then another two, then another two for each subject! This is endless! Are you going to sleep or not? If not, take your blanket and get the hell out!”

“Alright, alright, fine—sleep, sleep.” Yan Junsheng quickly soothed her, shutting the books and pushing them aside. He took Ming Ming’s hand and said solemnly, “Juan’er, don’t worry. I’ll make sure to tutor you well. When the college entrance exam is restored, you’ll be the first one on that testing floor!”

Ming Ming: “…”

“…Thanks.”
