“I… I don’t know what to do either.” Nan Xiaoxiao choked back a few sobs before breaking into full-on tears. “Fengguang, I’m worried about Yan Yu. Maybe… maybe I should go back…”
“Don’t panic just yet. Chen Yu knows how important Yan Yu is to you. That’s exactly why he’s using him to pressure you into going back. He won’t hurt him for now. You look exhausted—why don’t you get some rest in your room first? We can come up with a plan later.”
What Fengguang said made sense. Nan Xiaoxiao nodded through her tears and went to the room next door to rest.
Once they were alone, Xu Wang pulled Fengguang into his arms and sat with her on the bed. He asked softly, “Do you want to help her?”
“She looked so pitiful, crying like that… I do.”
“But you didn’t agree to help her,” Xu Wang pointed out. He knew Fengguang well—she had comforted Nan Xiaoxiao while they were talking, but never once did she promise to do anything.
Leaning against his chest, Fengguang said slowly, “I can’t guarantee that helping her won’t get you hurt. There’s no way I’d promise something like that on impulse.”
“I won’t get hurt.”
“You can’t say that for sure.” She looked up at him stubbornly. “Even if your powers are strong, there will always be times when you let your guard down. What if—just what if something happens to you? It would break my heart.”
Compared to him, Yan Yu was nothing but a stranger to her. Of course Xu Wang mattered more. And though that made her feel a bit guilty toward Nan Xiaoxiao—especially since back in prison, when Nan Xiaoxiao thought Fengguang was in danger, she had truly wanted to help her escape—Fengguang still couldn’t bring herself to put someone else’s safety above Xu Wang’s.
Nan Xiaoxiao saw Fengguang as a real friend, but Fengguang, who knew the original plot, always kept a bit of emotional distance from this so-called friendship.
Honestly, why did this world have to set the female lead and the female side character up as best friends in the first place? And to make it worse, the lead wasn’t secretly manipulative or fake—she was as pure as she looked. Fengguang couldn’t even find a single flaw in her to use as an excuse to turn away.
Xu Wang gently smoothed the crease between her brows and chuckled. “Feeling conflicted?”
“Mm…” She nodded, defeated.
He knew she didn’t have a cold heart. Patting her back, he said, “Maybe we should just wait and see. Let things play out a little.”
“I guess that’s all we can do…” She didn’t want to turn Nan Xiaoxiao down, but even more than that, she couldn’t bear the thought of Xu Wang getting hurt. Maybe… maybe she really was the kind of person who prioritized love over friendship.
Well, at least she could admit that to herself now.
But things rarely go the way you expect. The very next day, Fengguang realized Nan Xiaoxiao was gone. She searched all over, only to hear the buzz of townspeople on the street: the Minister of Internal Affairs would be marrying a female Omega sent by the Empire tomorrow, and everyone was welcome to attend the ceremony.
Back at the hotel, Fengguang gritted her teeth. “She must’ve gone back because she was worried about Yan Yu.”
“Are you mad?” Xu Wang asked with a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
She huffed, “She’s the one who decided to throw herself at him to be marked. What do I have to be mad about?”
“Right. Fengguang’s not mad at all,” Xu Wang said with an amused tone as he pulled out a finely carved wooden box. “Here—this is the gift I mentioned. The one I wanted to give you.”
Fengguang blinked in surprise. “Didn’t you say you had it hidden somewhere? When did you get it? I didn’t even notice.”
They hadn’t been apart at all these past few days.
