Meanwhile, a thousand miles away at the border between the Southern Tang Kingdom and the Great Zhou Dynasty, an ordinary-looking carriage sped toward them. While the carriage appeared plain, its interior was extremely luxurious.
“Miss, we are about to enter the territory of the Great Zhou Dynasty. Would you like to rest?” The coachman was a martial arts master with profound inner strength.
“Guard Ma, you must be tired after a day’s journey. Let’s rest.”
“Yes.”
Guard Ma parked the carriage in a shady spot. A maid helped a beautiful woman down from the carriage. Another maid went ahead to the shade of a tree, found a rock, and placed a silk handkerchief on it.
Gu Pianran sat directly on the rock, while the maid beside her gently fanned herself.
“It’s so hot.”
Gu Pianran pulled a silk handkerchief from her sleeve and gently wiped the fine beads of sweat from her forehead.
“Miss, just bear with it a little longer. We’ll be in the Great Zhou Dynasty soon.” The maid whispered.
“Mm.” Gu Pianran responded softly.
Just then, Guard Ma shouted sharply toward the dense forest, “Who’s there?”
Gu Pianran and her two maids were startled and looked in surprise toward the forest.
Guard Ma said to Gu Pianran, “Miss, you wait here. I’ll go check.”
“Guard Ma, be careful.”
Guard Ma picked up his sword and went into the forest, returning quickly.
“Did you find anything?” Gu Pianran asked.
“Miss, there’s a corpse in the forest.”
“A corpse?” Gu Pianran raised an eyebrow.
The two maids accompanying her widened their eyes in shock, fear evident in their gazes.
“Let’s go take a look.”
Hearing their mistress’s words, the maid beside her immediately tried to dissuade her, saying, “Miss, we shouldn’t go over there. Seeing a corpse will bring bad luck. Let’s leave this place quickly.”
Gu Pianran said nonchalantly, “It’s alright, just see. If you two are afraid, stay where you are and wait for us.”
“This…” The two maids exchanged glances.
Since their mistress had gone, how could they, as her maids, abandon her?
They could only grit their teeth and follow.
Guard Ma led the way, with Gu Pianran close behind, the two maids nervously following beside her. After walking for a while, the four of them saw a body lying in a pile of grass in the distance.
When the two maids saw the person, they unconsciously shrank back.
Gu Pianran followed Guard Ma forward, and when they got close enough, they could clearly see the man’s condition. He was covered in blood, his body riddled with wounds.
Gu Pianran’s gaze was fixed on the man’s face. He was incredibly handsome, more handsome than any man she had ever seen.
Gu Pianran, as if possessed, moved closer to the man.
Seeing his mistress about to touch the corpse, Guard Ma quickly stopped her, “Miss.”
“It’s alright, I just wanted to see if he was really dead.” Gu Pianran reached out, but before her hand could touch the man’s body, it was suddenly grabbed by a pair of bloodied hands.
Gu Pianran was startled, as were the guard and the two maids.
“Miss!” Guard Ma drew his sword and stepped forward, but before he could strike, the man released his grip and completely fainted.
“Guard Ma, you don’t need to be so nervous. He’s seriously injured; he won’t do anything to me.” Gu Pianran said softly, her gaze fixed on the man’s face.
