Chapter 88: Right and Wrong
As Hesske’s birthday approached, Yexue found herself with some time to spare and decided to visit a nearby shopping mall.
After purchasing a gift, as she exited the gift shop, she heard someone calling her from behind.
—“Miss Ye.”
Hearing the slightly familiar voice, Yexue furrowed her brows slightly and turned around.
Yu Mingxuan stood there, half-smiling, taking a few steps forward. “It is you. Miss Ye, you’re not at the Xuan Zhen temple, so what brings you here? Unless… something strange happened in this mall?”
Though Yu Mingxuan spoke with a smile, there was no humor in his eyes.
Yexue glanced to the side and saw something. She furrowed her brows and took a step back.
Yu Mingxuan, thinking Yexue was feeling guilty over their last encounter, sneered inwardly and was about to make a sarcastic comment when suddenly a vase fell from above.
Yu Mingxuan’s face turned pale as he quickly dodged.
The vase landed perfectly in the spot where Yu Mingxuan had just been standing.
If he hadn’t reacted in time, it would have smashed right into his head.
Not far away, people turned to look at the noise, and murmurs began.
The mall manager also arrived soon after, apologized to Yu Mingxuan after hearing the details, offered compensation, and had someone clean up the broken pieces to prevent injury to passersby.
Yu Mingxuan felt a severe headache, frustrated by the delay this caused, and the anger within him surged when he saw Yexue staring blankly ahead, seemingly enjoying the spectacle.
At that moment, Yu Mingxuan’s bodyguards came over, and he impatiently waved them off. “Whatever issues there are, let my lawyer handle them.”
He then moved directly towards Yexue.
Standing before her, Yu Mingxuan spoke sternly, “Miss Ye, you really have guts. You think I can’t handle you?”
Yexue looked surprised and replied calmly, “Mr. Yu, what are you talking about? You don’t think I caused that vase to fall, do you?”
But Yu Mingxuan only sneered in response.
Seeing his expression, Yexue knew he was just venting his frustration. He was looking for someone to take it out on.
Yexue remained unfazed, giving him a level gaze. With his build, she could handle him ten times over.
Yu Mingxuan noticed Yexue’s calm demeanor and couldn’t help but smile. “Looks like Miss Ye isn’t afraid of me.”
As they spoke, their distance narrowed, and they were soon out of sight from the surrounding crowd.
Yexue, sizing up the lean figure before her, was just about to throw him with an over-the-shoulder move when a figure rushed over, grabbed Yu Mingxuan’s arm, and started hitting him with her handbag, shouting, “How dare you bully my daughter! How dare you bully my daughter!”
Before Yu Mingxuan could make out who it was, he was already being pummelled.
“Who dares hit me? Do you know who I am?” Yu Mingxuan shouted, his vision blurring with pain.
Yexue stood there, stunned, watching the woman before her exerting surprising force, easily overpowering a grown man.
As Yu Mingxuan finally recognized the woman, he was astonished, “Mom, what are you doing? I’m Yu Mingxuan! Who else bullied your daughter? Where did you get a daughter?”
Yu Mingxuan’s mother, unfazed, continued hitting him with the handbag.
Yu Mingxuan was on the verge of snapping, “If you don’t stop, I’ll hit back!”
Just then, Yu Mingxuan’s father arrived, trying to intervene. But Yu Mingxuan’s mother, still hitting him, snapped, “Don’t you dare get involved! Yu Huairong, you’re not a man if you let your daughter get bullied like this!”
Yu Huairong then realized there were others around.
He had come out with his wife to clear her mind when she suddenly reacted violently and rushed downstairs, grabbing whatever she could to throw at Yu Mingxuan.
Yu Huairong, noticing Yexue, spoke apologetically, “I’m really sorry, my wife mistook you for her daughter.”
Yexue shook her head, “It’s fine.”
Yu Mingxuan was at his wit’s end, almost cursing out loud, “Dad! I’m the one getting hit, why are you apologizing to others?”
Yexue noticed the bodyguards closing in on them and stepped forward to intervene. “I’m fine, Mr. Yu…”
But before she could finish, Yu Mingxuan’s mother calmed down, dropped the bag, and hugged Yexue tightly, “Nann, don’t be scared, Mommy’s here. No one can bully you.”
Yexue was momentarily taken aback by the warm embrace.
Yu Mingxuan, in pain, could only watch as his mother’s fiercely protective instincts were aimed at someone else. He couldn’t help but mutter under his breath, “Crazy!”
The words were quiet, but Yu Mingxuan’s mother heard them and glared at him, threatening, “If I see you bullying my Nann again, I’ll peel your skin off!”
Yu Mingxuan was dumbfounded.
Growing up, his mother had always been mild-mannered, even during her worst episodes, she never hurt anyone else. Now, seeing her in a fierce protective mode was surprising.
What on earth was going on?
Was Yexue somehow connected to Yu Huairong’s family, giving her such confidence?
Yu Huairong, noticing Yu Mingxuan’s gaze, stepped between Yexue and his wife, addressing Yu Mingxuan seriously, “Mingxuan, I know you’ve always been troublesome. Normally, I wouldn’t get involved, even if you take your frustration out on family. But you’ve gone too far this time. If I catch you bullying this girl again, don’t expect me to hold back.”
Yue Mingxuan gradually became expressionless as he understood Yue Huarong’s message.
Was this a warning?
Why? Because this crazy woman thought of Yue Xue as her daughter?
It was ridiculous; where did they get this girl from in the Yue family?!
No matter what Yue Mingxuan was thinking inside, he could only reluctantly grit his teeth and reply, “I understand.”
After Yue Mingxuan left, Yue’s mother finally let go of her embrace. She looked over Yue Xue carefully, relieved when she saw no signs of injury.
Yue Huarong said, “That boy Mingxuan isn’t an easy one; he holds grudges. If he sets his sights on someone, it’s not a good thing. Luckily, I saw him and Lianrou out today; otherwise, you might have been in trouble.” He sighed, “I’m sorry for involving you because of Minghe’s situation.”
Yue Xue shook her head, “It’s okay, maybe he’s just upset because I refused to help him change his fate. People like Yue Mingxuan would find another excuse to resent me, whether it was this or something else. No need to feel guilty.”
Yue Huarong looked at Yue Xue and said, “If you have any trouble, just let me know. I’ll do my best to help you.”
Yue Xue smiled, “I will.”
Her phone suddenly rang, Yue Xue checked it—it was a call from her roommate, Gao Lan.
Gao Lan asked, “Are you still not back yet? Class is about to start.”
Yue Xue glanced down at her screen; it was indeed getting close to class time.
She hung up the phone and turned to them, “I have class this afternoon, so I’m heading back to school now.”
Yue Huarong nodded, “Academics come first, go ahead.”
Yue’s mother, however, was confused, “Aren’t we going home with our daughter?”
Yue Huarong held his wife’s hand gently, “She has her things to do.”
Yue’s mother watched Yue Xue walking away, suddenly rubbing her temples with a frown.
Yue Huarong quickly asked, “Lianrou, what’s wrong?”
Yue’s mother frowned slightly, her face pale, shaking her head, “It’s nothing, just… my head hurts a little.”
Yue Mingxuan returned home with a grim face.
He asked his assistant, “How’s the situation at Xuan Zhen Guan?”
The assistant hesitated.
Yue Mingxuan, annoyed, snapped, “What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue?”
The assistant finally spoke up, “It’s not… smooth. We planned to pressure Dao Xie over there to help out, but they’ve been playing dumb. Even with Yue family backing…”
He glanced at Yue Mingxuan’s expression and hurriedly said, “It’s no use.”
“What did you say?!” Yue Mingxuan almost crushed his cup, taking a deep breath. “Call those Taoists over here.”
The assistant, afraid of the consequences, hurriedly ran off.
Yue Huarong heard the sound of things breaking from a distance. He came out of his study, seeing Yue Mingxuan’s injuries.
He approached and asked, “What happened, Mingxuan? Did you run into danger on the road?”
He turned to question Yue Mingxuan’s bodyguards, “Where are they? How did they not protect the young master?”
“They’re with me,” Yue Mingxuan said, twisting the cap to apply medicine, wincing as he touched his wound again. “Damn, that crazy woman had so much strength.”
Yue Huarong raised an eyebrow, “Crazy woman? Who did you run into?”
Yue Mingxuan picked up a cotton swab to apply medicine. “Who else could it be? Of course, it’s Minghe’s mother…”
Before Yue Mingxuan could finish, Yue Huarong covered his mouth quickly, “Mmm mmm!”
Yue Huarong looked around to make sure no one was nearby before closing the door and lecturing, “I’ve told you a hundred times—no matter what you’re thinking, you need to act the part in front of outsiders! If anyone hears you disrespecting elders like this, they’ll think we raised a thug.”
Yue Mingxuan wasn’t convinced.
After a moment, Yue Huarong let go of his grip, reiterating, “Next time, no more of that. Understand?”
Yue Mingxuan replied, “I know, but I’m just saying it in front of you.”
Yue Huarong sighed, “Walls have ears!” He added, “So you ran into her?”
Yue Mingxuan, recalling the incident earlier, winced again. “I ran into Xuan Zhen Guan people at the mall on Xin Fa Road. I was planning to warn this so-called Taoist, Yue Xue, but then Mom came rushing in, hitting me with her purse. Dad even warned me for that Taoist’s sake.”
Yue Huarong pondered, “Which means they must know Yue Xue. Your trip to Xuan Zhen Guan went nowhere because they were protecting Yue Xue. Otherwise, why would Yue Huarong help a stranger?”
“Wait…” Yue Huarong seemed to have thought of something else, continuing, “If Minghe’s marriage was broken, and they were still protecting Yue Xue, we couldn’t find out who saved Minghe before. It must be Yue Xue. Otherwise, there’s no way Yue Huarong would get involved with someone so unfamiliar.”
Yue Mingxuan pondered, “So you’re saying I just have to swallow this?”
Yue Huarong, with a thoughtful look, picked up a throwing dart and threw it at the wall, hitting the bullseye. He said, “You can’t dodge the fifteenth if you missed the first.”
