“Five taels of silver a month.”
Bei Yutang wasn’t surprised when she heard this.
Five taels of silver were more than double what it cost in Baiyun Town; the cost of living in this provincial capital was much higher than in Baiyun Town.
“Let’s go check out the other one.”
“Okay. The other one is nearby, just two alleys away.”
Zhao Erhu led the way, with Bei Yutang following behind. They did indeed cross two alleys, but once they did, they realized that this was one of the most remote areas in the entire land.
“Don’t be fooled by its remote location, but that house is quite nice.”
Zhao Erhu opened the gate.
The courtyard was overgrown with weeds. The house, while not shabby, wasn’t much better either. Compared to the previous one, this one was a world apart.
The difference between the two was so great that everyone was inclined toward the middle courtyard.
“How much is the monthly rent for this courtyard?” Bei Yutang asked calmly.
“Four taels of silver.” Zhao Erhu said.
“This one.” Bei Yutang decided.
Perhaps it was because Bei Yutang had made her decision too quickly or perhaps it was so unexpected that it left Zhao Erhu stunned for a moment.
“Do you really want this courtyard?” Zhao Erhu couldn’t help but ask.
Although this courtyard looked twice as large as the previous one, the house was much older and even located in the most remote area. It had been vacant for a long time, untenanted.
“Yes, this one.”
Zhao Erhu finally recovered. Hearing her remark so confidently, he found it incredible that she had chosen this courtyard.
Zhao Erhu was very efficient. Both parties and the owner signed an agreement.
Bei Yutang paid two months’ rent, and this courtyard became their temporary home in Linzhou Prefecture.
The next day, Bei Yutang and the other two checked out of the inn and moved into the house.
When Xiao Zimo and Daixiang saw the mess in the courtyard, they worried whether they could finish cleaning it today.
“Mo’er, you and Daixiang go buy some necessities and food.” Bei Yutang instructed.
“Mother, what about this courtyard?”
“Leave it to me.”
Daixiang said, “Sister Mu, you can’t finish it alone. Let’s clean it together. It’ll be faster that way.”
Bei Yutang waved her hand.
“No need. I have a solution. Your task today is to buy the supplies.”
Daixiang and Xiao Zimo were pushed out of the courtyard by Bei Yutang.
After they left, a group of middle-aged women arrived at the gate. They were temporary workers Bei Yutang had hired from the west side of the city.
“I’m sorry to bother you today.”
“Big sister, you’re welcome.” One of the middle-aged women said with a smile.
Bei Yutang assigned the ten women, four to handle the courtyard and six to clean the house. These women were all experienced workers, so their hands and feet were swift and skillful.
By afternoon, the entire courtyard was ablaze with life.
When Daixiang and Xiao Zimo returned with a cart full of supplies, they almost didn’t recognize the house.
Daixiang stared at the courtyard in amazement.
“Sister Mu, how did you manage this all by yourself?”
Xiao Zimo was also taken aback, but he quickly figured it out.
Bei Yutang jokingly said, “It became like this after I cast a spell.”
Daixiang’s eyes sparkled, “Really?”
Bei Yutang looked at her dumbfounded expression and chuckled, “Silly girl, of course, I was lying. I invited ten women to help clean it up.”
Daixiang suddenly understood.
At the same time, thousands of miles away, amidst the mountains, a person of special status entered the heart of the castle.
