Han Qi’s Extra Story (Part 1)

That Saturday, it rained. The gray sky made the funeral feel even heavier.

Everyone wore black, gathered to mourn a man who had achieved a great breakthrough in biological science—Han Wei.

Because of him, this man barely past forty had discovered how to cultivate artificial organs and made it possible. His work had changed modern medicine forever.

He was a great man.

But a car accident took his life—perhaps because Heaven doesn’t allow anyone to rewrite the script of fate. So Heaven called this great man home early.

Yes. Han Wei was a great man.

The priest finished his eulogy with a solemn tone, and the ceremony came to an end. Zhen Wei, sobbing uncontrollably, was helped into a car.

It was a rainy day, and the roads were slick.

Han Qi held Fengguang’s hand. “Are you feeling alright?” he asked gently.

She nodded. “I’m fine.”

Dressed in a simple black dress, Fengguang looked solemn and composed. One of her hands was in his; the other instinctively rested on her rounded belly.

She was pregnant, five months along.

After turning twenty, during her sophomore year of college, she and Han Qi got married. Naturally, Xia Chao hadn’t wanted to see his daughter marry so young, but what could he do? The deed was done—Fengguang was already expecting.

She had taken a break from her studies to prepare for the baby.

Han Qi, now an adult, was more mature and refined than ever. Fengguang knew that girls at the university often tried to confess to him—almost every week, someone would approach him. And his answer was always the same: he’d lift his left hand, show the wedding band on his ring finger, and smile.
“I’m already married.”

Even with that, Fengguang couldn’t help feeling insecure. Maybe it was the hormones, or maybe it was because her father-in-law’s sudden death had shaken her.

“Your father was always so careful,” she said quietly. “He never drank before driving. How could he end up in a drunk-driving accident?”

“He’d just received a major academic award,” Han Qi said softly. “I guess he let his guard down in the moment of celebration.”

He tilted the umbrella more toward her, leaving his own shoulder exposed to the rain.

Fengguang frowned and nudged it back toward him. “Stop worrying about me—you’ll get sick, and your health still isn’t great.”

“But if you got sick, I’d feel worse than if it were me,” he said, smiling faintly. The warmth in his handsome face was like a soft spring breeze. Even in the black suit, there was a calm, magnetic charm about him.

Fengguang couldn’t fight his gentle words. She leaned closer so he wouldn’t get as wet. Thinking of herself, then of Zhen Wei, she sighed. “What about your mom? How will she manage?”

“She’s a strong woman.” Han Qi slipped an arm around her waist as they walked. “Our baby will be here soon. She’ll move past the grief.”

“I hope so.” Fengguang truly liked her mother-in-law and wanted her to recover from the loss.

Han Qi looked down at her, his voice tender. “Let’s go home.”

She nodded. “Okay.”

After the wedding, Han Qi and Fengguang had moved out, leaving only Zhen Wei in the Han family’s large house after her husband’s death.

The housekeeper, worried she’d make herself ill from grief, went to the kitchen to prepare a nourishing dinner.

Alone in her room, Zhen Wei sat with swollen, tear-stained eyes. Her gaze lingered on Han Wei’s belongings, and the tears started all over again.

After a long while, she picked up his phone. She still remembered the wallpaper—it was a photo of the two of them. She knew looking at it would hurt, but she wanted to anyway. The password was her birthday.

When the screen lit up, she didn’t see the familiar photo.
Instead, there was a voice message—unsent.

Almost without thinking, she tapped it.

“Xiaowei, we were wrong—completely wrong. The boy we raised for ten years, Han Qi, isn’t really our son. He’s…”

The man’s voice cut off abruptly—
followed by the deafening crash of metal on metal.
