Chapter 241 

It was a little after 5 p.m.

The two sixteen-year-old teenagers who had gone to school were back. The boy was named Xu Ci, and the girl was Xu Shan. Though they were twins, they didn’t look alike. Both were noticeably thin and frail due to long-term malnutrition.

However, they were surprisingly good-looking, especially Xu Shan. Though her skin wasn’t very fair, her eyes were unusually clear, shining like stars in the night sky.

Xu Shan was the “stepmom” figure from the original host’s memory. But in reality, they hadn’t interacted much. The original host had only stayed here for fifteen days and had offended both of them on the first day. Since then, they hadn’t spoken to each other, and the original host hadn’t bothered to make peace either.

When Xu Ci and Xu Shan returned home, they saw a young girl dozing off on the steps.

The two exchanged glances, remembered her troubled outburst from the day before, and chose to ignore her as they walked past.

Xu Ci went to fetch water, while Xu Shan began to prepare dinner.

But this time, they were stopped by Grandpa Xu.

“Grandpa, what’s wrong? We’re not eating today?” Xu Shan looked a little disheartened. “Are we out of rice? We can eat sweet potatoes instead.”

Grandpa Xu chuckled, “No, no. A’Li is treating us tonight.”

That one sentence made the two kids, who were about to get busy, freeze and look over in surprise.

Qingli had already woken up, rubbing her face before smiling. “The production team gave me a task to complete, and as a reward, we’re getting a big dinner tonight. No need to cook—just come wait with me for the food delivery.”

Her smile was disarmingly charming, especially now that she had shed her earlier hostility toward this place. It made her feel much more approachable.

Xu Shan, being a pure-hearted girl who hadn’t seen much of the world, was completely captivated by how beautiful Jiang Qingli was—she even looked better than the celebrities she’d seen on TV at her classmate’s house. Dazed, she walked over and sat beside Qingli, enviously asking, “Really? You’re amazing! Will it be enough for all four of us?”

Qingli lifted her chin proudly and, like a little girl showing off, said cheerfully, “Of course it will!”

Xu Shan giggled, her eyes curving into little crescents.

Xu Ci, on the other hand, glanced at Qingli cautiously. After confirming there was nothing suspicious, he silently returned to the house, clearly uninterested in being caught on camera.

The abundance of food made Grandpa Xu and the two kids hesitate, unsure whether they should dig in.

Qingli stood up and used clean chopsticks to give everyone a little taste, cheerfully saying, “Come on, eat up! It’s not easy to wring this much out of the production crew—we can’t waste it!”

Then she took a big bite of meat herself.

Xu Shan followed, cradling her bowl while savoring the delicious food. Her feet started swinging in delight. “Wow, it’s so good! This is the best thing I’ve ever eaten!”

Grandpa Xu smiled as he slowly sipped his congee.

The quiet boy, Xu Ci, ate slowly and methodically, eventually murmuring, “Thank you.”

Though his voice was soft, Qingli heard it clearly and responded with a cheerful, “You’re welcome.”

They both shared a smile.

Qingli noticed Grandpa Xu was only drinking congee and offered him some soup. “Grandpa, eat more. You’re too thin. You need the nourishment. Don’t hold back—there’s enough here for all of us!”

“Ai…” Grandpa Xu tried to refuse, thinking he could save some for tomorrow.

But Qingli insisted and put the soup in his bowl anyway. In the end, he had no choice but to eat. It seemed like it had been ages since he’d had a proper meal. As he ate, his eyes filled with tears, and he secretly wiped them away.

Off-camera, Grandpa Jiang—who had come to check in on his granddaughter—watched with a proud smile. Though there was a trace of jealousy in his expression, he was deeply moved. A’Li has grown up. That’s a good thing. It’s just… she’s never been this sweet to me!

The comments section was just as moved:

Just like the viewers, Xu Shan was surprised by how easy Qingli was to get along with. The kindness she radiated made Xu Shan bolder and more attached.

She asked curiously, “Qingli, I’ve heard of this show before. People say only ‘bad kids’ come here to be reformed. But you’re so pretty—why are you here?”

The comment section burst into laughter:

To be fair, Qingli hadn’t made a great first impression, but they’d seen her own up to her mistakes. That alone showed she wasn’t some delinquent who couldn’t tell right from wrong. It made no sense for her to be on this show.

Qingli blinked innocently and said, “I don’t know—maybe someone just didn’t like me.”

“It wasn’t your parents who sent you here?” Xu Shan asked, shocked.

Qingli’s smile faded. “My mom passed away when I was very young. As for my dad, the only time I ever see him is at breakfast. If I wake up late, I don’t even get that.”

Silence fell over the table. Xu Shan, feeling guilty for bringing it up, gave Qingli the big chicken drumstick.

The peaceful atmosphere in the comments exploded:

There were also task guidelines explaining what kind of hat would meet the standards.

After reading it aloud, Qingli chuckled.

The production team was going hard. The original host had never faced something like this. Even skilled weavers needed half a day to finish a hat, and she was a complete beginner. Even if the standards were lowered, this was a tall order.

The comments section was stunned:
