Fengguang knew he could move from place to place in the blink of an eye, but she still wasn’t happy. “Why didn’t you take me with you?”

“Because I couldn’t wait any longer,” he said, placing the box into her hands. “Go ahead and open it. See what’s inside.”

She followed his cue and opened the intricately carved box, curiosity in her eyes. Inside was a pendant made of amber, and suspended within it appeared to be a petal from a red rose. Her face lit up with delight. “This amber is beautiful! Xu Wang, put it on me.”

He took out the pendant, walked behind her, and gently fastened it around her neck. Then he wrapped his arms around her from behind, his voice soft against her ear. “Fengguang, this piece means a lot to me.”

She teased, “How much is ‘a lot’?”

“About… as much as my life.”

“What?” Fengguang froze for a moment, then instinctively clutched the pendant tighter. “If it’s that important to you, then I’ll make sure to protect it with everything I’ve got.”

She had assumed, given his usually indifferent personality, that he wouldn’t care so deeply about anything. But when she thought about it more, she realized—Xu Wang was still human. And humans all have things that matter to them. Sometimes it’s a person, sometimes it’s an object. And in his case… she had enough confidence to believe she might be that person.

Seeing how serious she looked, Xu Wang rested his chin on top of her head and chuckled. “But even so, this pendant still isn’t as important as you. So if you ever have to choose between protecting it or protecting yourself, I hope you’ll choose yourself first.”

“I understand.” Fengguang turned to face him and wrapped her arms around him with a bright smile. She wanted to ask why the amber meant so much to him, but since he hadn’t said, she didn’t feel the need to pry. She understood Xu Wang—if he wanted her to know, he’d tell her.

“Fengguang, do you trust me?”

She nodded. “I do.”

“Then you’ll believe me when I say that no matter what I do, no matter what happens, I’ll always come back to you. Right?”

She felt something was off. “Xu Wang… what are you trying to say?”

“I need to go to Chen Yu’s estate,” he said, his eyes narrowing slightly.

“Didn’t you already say it?” he cut her off gently, soothing her worries. “You trust me. And I promised—I’ll come back to you, safe and sound. All you have to do is stay here in the hotel and wait for me.”
