Shen Yanjun still seemed lost in thought sometimes, staring out the window.
Xu Yin knew his heart still had lingering feelings for Huo Qingli—especially since she had changed so drastically. The moment she asked for a divorce, she blocked him everywhere and completely cut ties without a hint of drama.
A woman he had spent years with suddenly disappearing from his life… even habits were hard to break.
Xu Yin gripped her phone tightly, her mind a mess. She couldn’t help but search the internet for advice on… certain topics.
“Why are you still here?” a shrill voice suddenly cut through her anxious thoughts.
Startled, Xu Yin fumbled to exit the page she was on and hurriedly stood up, flustered.
At the door of the office, Shen Yanjun’s mother appeared, her brows furrowed.
Her eyes were filled with disdain as she looked at Xu Yin and said sharply, “Yanjun, your father and I cannot accept this woman. If you keep being this disobedient and upsetting your father, you might not even be able to hold onto your position as general manager!”
Shen Yanjun wasn’t the only child in the Shen family. Although Father Shen seemed mild-mannered, he was like a dog that never barked—dangerous without warning. Back when Shen Yanjun was just starting elementary school, his father had hired a highly educated nanny to raise their second son.
But Father Shen ended up getting involved with her.
The young woman, in her twenties, naïvely believed he would divorce his wife for her. When that didn’t happen, she grew resentful and kidnapped Shen Yanjun in a desperate act of love and revenge, exposing the scandal for the whole city to see—and shattering what Mother Shen thought was a perfect marriage.
Even though Shen Yanjun had been an innocent victim, Mother Shen couldn’t help but resent him. When doctors later warned that the kidnapping might have caused him psychological trauma, she met it with cold indifference.
Then, when their eldest son unexpectedly passed away, Mother Shen had no choice but to turn her attention to the son she had never truly loved.
But by then, it was too late. Shen Yanjun was distant. His grades were poor. He fell into early romances, completely failing to meet the expectations his parents had for their heir. Mother Shen had even spent a fortune trying to pay Xu Yin to leave him, but that only triggered stronger rebellion.
Thinking of all this, Mother Shen felt even more stifled. She glared at Xu Yin, feeling she wasn’t even worth a strand of Huo Qingli’s hair. How could her son possibly fall for this woman?
Xu Yin shrank under her stare, not daring to speak.
Meanwhile, Shen Yanjun sneered coldly. “So what if I lose the position? I can always go back to acting. What’s there to be afraid of?”
“Shen Yanjun!” Mother Shen snapped, her voice sharp. “Do you think you’re the only son of this family?!”
Shen Yanjun couldn’t even be bothered to respond. “If there’s nothing else, Mother, please leave.”
Mother Shen’s expression darkened. If he weren’t her only surviving son, she would have left without another word. Still, thinking of her bigger plans, she forced herself to calm down. She took a formal invitation from her bag and said, “The Zheng family is hosting a banquet. Their business ties with us are strong, and you must attend to the network. You’ve missed too many opportunities because of your stubbornness. This time, you can’t afford to skip it.”
At the mention of business, Shen Yanjun finally nodded. “Got it.”
He wasn’t the impulsive youth he used to be. Though he talked tough about going back to acting, he knew full well there was a huge difference between being an actor and managing a company.
Mother Shen finally seemed somewhat satisfied. Before leaving, she shot Xu Yin another sharp glare.
Xu Yin lowered her head, her eyes welling with tears.
When Shen Yanjun turned around and saw her quietly wiping her tears, he sighed and said, “You don’t have to take it to heart. She’s hard to deal with, but you won’t see her often.”
Xu Yin forced a smile. “I’m fine.”
But nothing about her looked “fine.” Shen Yanjun thought for a moment and said, “The Zheng family’s banquet is in three days. Why don’t we pick out a dress for you now?”
“You want me to go with you?” Xu Yin asked, surprised and delighted.
Shen Yanjun shrugged. “If you don’t go with me, am I supposed to go alone?”
Xu Yin was truly happy this time. All the sadness and anxiety from earlier disappeared in an instant. She nodded eagerly.
Shen Yanjun made a call to a styling studio he was familiar with, and soon Xu Yin was on her way.
It was the first time Xu Yin had ever experienced top-tier styling services. After a few hours, when Shen Yanjun came to pick her up for dinner, she couldn’t bear to take off the gown.
Xu Yin felt like a princess. She spent a long time admiring herself in the mirror. After some hesitation, she decided to wear the gown out to meet him.
When she stepped out, she saw Shen Yanjun sitting on the couch, completely absorbed in his phone.
She tiptoed closer. He didn’t even notice!
What could have him so focused?
Curious, Xu Yin decided to create another opportunity for a little physical closeness. She circled behind him and quickly covered his eyes with her hands, laughing playfully, “Guess who—”
Before she could even finish the sentence, she caught a glimpse of what was on his phone.
It was a stunning, high-definition action shot that looked straight out of a movie.
A woman dressed in black, hair slightly tousled, exuded a cold yet breathtaking beauty. She was sliding cleanly off a rooftop, her movements sleek and powerful.
The woman’s features were sharp and mesmerizing, her gaze fierce and full of intensity.
In that instant, Xu Yin’s confidence was crushed.
She had always known she wasn’t as beautiful as Huo Qingli, but seeing it so vividly, so undeniably, made her feel even worse.
Shame and fear twisted together inside her.
She stared at the caption on Shen Yanjun’s phone: “Huo Qingli’s new drama ‘Destiny Files’ leaks behind-the-scenes! So cool, I’m fainting! I have to watch it!”
Xu Yin’s hands were still covering Shen Yanjun’s eyes, but she couldn’t hold back her exclamation: “She’s filming another crime drama?!”
There was even a comment underneath: Just seeing this scene, I can already tell the quality is amazing!
What if… what if Huo Qingli rose back to the top because of this drama?
That thought made Xu Yin’s heart sink all over again.
