Chapter 91: The Final Chapter
Yu Qi’s hand gripped the door handle, and when he saw the visitor, he froze for a moment. After a brief pause, he called out, “Mr. Ye.”
The cotton doll in Yu Qi’s arms remained quiet, its brown glass eyes carefully studying the person outside the door.
Ye Yangyun was dressed in his familiar blue Taoist robe, exuding an air of grace and otherworldly presence.
He smiled lightly and spoke, explaining his purpose: “I have a few things I want to ask Senior Bai.”
As he spoke, his gaze swept across the temple, and he asked, “Is A-Xue not here?”
“A-Xue went out for some business. Please come in…”
Yu Qi was about to step aside to let him in, but at that moment, the cotton doll in his arms seemed to see something terrifying. It suddenly let out an earth-shattering cry: “My eyes… my eyes hurt so much…”
An icy chill instantly swept over the room.
Suddenly, the surroundings fell utterly silent, except for the child’s crying. Even the noise from a nearby street vendor seemed to disappear at that moment.
Yu Qi immediately sensed the oppressive silence.
His hand tightened around the door handle, and his body tensed with caution.
Just recently, Ye Xue had spoken with Ye Yangyun on the phone, and back then, Ye Yangyun had mentioned being in Fengyang Village. How could he possibly make it to Haicheng so quickly?
Unless Ye Yangyun had been lying. Perhaps he had never been in Fengyang at all.
Ye Yangyun, as though not hearing the child’s cries, turned to Yu Qi and smiled, asking, “What’s the matter? Are you not inviting me in?”
Before he could finish, Yu Qi tightly gripped the handle, turned, and closed the door. He then took the black obsidian bead from his hand and placed it behind the door.
Hurriedly, he stepped into the main hall, and the crying of the cotton doll caught the attention of Xu Zhou and others.
Bai Zi’ang, seeing the continuous crying, was about to ask when a wave of intense yin energy startled him. “What’s going on?”
Chen Su and Android, who were cleaning inside the hall, turned sharply, sensing something wrong and looking outside.
Chen Su, who seemed to have been struck by something, turned even paler, her face as white as a sheet. “Such a terrifying aura.”
Xu Zhou furrowed his brows. “How can there be such dense evil energy?”
“The mysterious figure in black has arrived,” Yu Qi turned back, staring at the dark clouds enveloping the outside. His expression grew serious as he continued, “He… is Ye Yangyun.”
At that moment, a dense black fog spread from behind Ye Yangyun, rapidly surrounding the entire Xuanzhen Temple, cutting it off from the outside world.
The mysterious man, now shrouded in black mist and wearing a black cloak, reappeared.
He stepped forward, but as soon as his hand reached for the door, the golden light from the protective charm struck it, burning his hand. The black mist covering it was instantly corroded, revealing a skeletal hand.
“Ye Yangyun?” Bai Zi’ang was shocked but quickly regained his composure. He understood that the most important thing now was to get through the immediate danger. He quickly said, “Xu Zhou, go offer incense to the Grand Master and find a way to ask the ancestors to lower their power. The other Taoists should return to their rooms. You are only an ordinary Taoist, and you won’t be able to defeat this person. Chen Su, Android, you should also find a place to hide.”
The situation was urgent, and everyone quickly nodded. Qin Haoran took the crying cotton doll and led the other Taoists to a side hall.
Chen Su and Android also followed instructions and found places to hide.
As Xu Zhou was about to head to the main hall, he heard a “crack” sound as the door in front of him opened.
It was too late.
The person in the black cloak stood there, only his chin visible.
Behind him was an abyss of darkness.
“Such a talisman can only stop ordinary ghosts; it won’t stop me.”
The man in black slowly walked toward them, raised his hand, and several vivid ghosts appeared beneath the black mist.
They looked at the Taoists, sensing their strong life force, and their faces twisted with greed and malice.
Bai Zi’ang recognized these ghosts as the ones that had yet to be captured from the Ronggui Well, his face tightening as he silently gripped the peachwood sword.
The leader of the black-clad group looked at them as if they were facing a great enemy and suddenly laughed. “Don’t be afraid. These are just a few vengeful spirits. The rest were already sent back to the underworld. Speaking of which, Mr. Yu, you are fortunate. How many times have I tried to let the vengeful and malevolent spirits’ yin energy corrode your soul, but you always managed to escape? To obtain a suitable body for cultivating a Taoist immortal physique isn’t easy!”
As he spoke, he stepped closer to Yu Qi, extending his right hand to grab at Yu Qi’s heart.
Yu Qi narrowly dodged, but his face was scratched by the black mist, leaving several deep wounds.
At that moment, Bai Zi’ang shouted, “Mr. Yu, catch this!”
He threw the peachwood sword toward Yu Qi.
Yu Qi quickly reached out and caught it. When the black mist attacked again, he sliced through it with the sword. Since the myriad of ghosts had left his body, Yu Qi’s blocked meridians had already been unblocked, but he hadn’t yet fully mastered his power. As a result, the sword strike consumed a third of his strength.
He staggered back a few steps, barely maintaining his balance.
The figure in the black mist remained calm, as though unaffected, and continued evaluating, “As expected of a natural Taoist body. Even though you’ve only practiced for less than half a year, your progress is astonishing.”
“But unfortunately, this body will soon be mine.”
Just as he finished speaking, the black mist surged once again, this time even faster than before.
Bai Zi’ang and Xu Zhou were still struggling to deal with the ghosts that had escaped the Ronggui Well, unable to offer any help.
With each new attack from the black mist, even though Yu Qi was able to block and evade, his face and hands were inevitably scarred.
The yin energy seeped through his wounds, chilling him to the bone.
Yu Qi’s face grew paler with each passing moment, and after one more strike to block, the peachwood sword broke with a “crack.”
Yu Qi spat blood, his energy almost depleted. He could only watch as the black mist descended again.
However, the death he imagined didn’t come. Light suddenly reappeared as a protective talisman appeared in front of him, breaking through the black mist.
Ye Xue stood against the wall, her arm raised as if she had just thrown something.
She slowly lowered her hand, and Bai Liu, holding Ye Xue’s body and the sword, rushed toward her.
“Master, you need to return to your body!”
Ye Xue’s soul reentered her body. The first thing she did after obtaining the Evil-Breaking Sword was to fiercely swing it, dispersing the nearby black mist.
The surrounding fog gradually dissipated, and the cloak was shattered by the sword light, splitting into two halves.
The man in the cloak froze in place, slowly raising his head.
Beneath the cloak, it was Ye Yangyun’s face.
Even though everyone already suspected the truth, seeing it before them still sent a shock through their hearts.
Ye Yangyun, seeing the scattered money talismans on the ground, understood. “These are the protective talismans I gave you.”
Ye Xue tightly gripped her sword, her voice calm. “Yes, these are the talismans you gave me. They’ve served two purposes: first, they allowed me to detect your presence when they scattered in Fengyang Village, leading me to find Bao Wenxuan under the bed. And now, ‘using one’s spear to counter one’s shield,’ it blocked the black mist’s attack.”
Ye Yangyun sighed lightly, seemingly regretful. “A-Xue, you returned too quickly. Just like last time, if you hadn’t reacted so fast, Yu Qi would have been dead by now.”
“Why?” Ye Xue pointed her sword at him and asked, “Why did you do this? You stole the female sword from the Ronggui Well, you released the malevolent spirits, and you made the summoning talismans. The page torn from the manual wasn’t about ‘spells,’ but the design for the summoning talisman, wasn’t it?!”
Ye Yangyun calmly responded, “Why? I want to live as a human. Is that not acceptable? This body of Ye Yangyun is too old for me now. If I had another choice back then, I wouldn’t have used it. But now, I have a chance, so why not take a new one?”
Bai Liu, finding an opening, retorted, “Stop pretending. You don’t even know how many times you’ve died. You died as a ghost once and then died again. What, now you want to become human again and die once more?”
Ye Yangyun’s smile faltered slightly as he looked at him with a smile that was more mockery than anything, and said, “You’re quick with your tongue. Do you think that just because you have an unpredictable identity, I won’t dare to deal with you?”
Bai Zi’ang sensed something was wrong and pressed a talisman onto the vicious ghost, pushing it back while he questioned with half of his mind, “Body? What body?”
Bai Liu explained, “When Uncle Master and I went to the underworld, we found that the real Master Ye had already entered the cycle of reincarnation long ago. The current Master… is just a monster that has had its body occupied by an unknown creature.”
As he spoke, his anger grew, and he turned to shout, “Of course you would dare! What wouldn’t you dare? You even deceive the child you raised, what can’t you do?”
Ye Yangyun replied coldly, “I’ve already shown mercy by not killing her.”
Bai Liu rolled his eyes dramatically, “That’s just a lame excuse!”
Ye Yangyun wasn’t angry, “The young brat only knows how to talk back.”
Taking advantage of his distraction, Bai Liu pulled out the sorrowful staff and linked it with the soul-capturing rope, striking towards him, “Take my blow!”
Ye Yangyun reacted quickly, dodging backward.
At the same time, the mighty sword was unsheathed and aimed at Ye Yangyun.
Ye Yangyun effortlessly sidestepped, laughing loudly, “What a clever diversion! Disciple, don’t forget, all of this was taught by me. How could I not know what you’re thinking?”
Ye Xue coldly said, “I would rather not have you as my master!” She then swung her sword again.
Ye Yangyun summoned a magical sword to counter Ye Xue’s, blocking her strike while speaking, “I gave you a choice—either live as an ordinary person in Fengyang Village, or face this harsh reality as a Heavenly Master.”
Ye Yangyun blocked again, his blurred face reflected in the sword’s blade. “You chose this path yourself, and you even returned to Fengyang Village.”
When Ye Xue saw the sword in his hand, she was shocked, “A female sword?!”
Xu Zhou, recognizing the magical sword Ye Yangyun held, muttered in confusion, “If that’s the case, why did he steal the female sword back then and return it? Why go in circles like this?”
Ye Yangyun smiled lightly, “Of course…”
“—It was to draw him here!”
As he spoke, black mist appeared again, quickly surging towards Yu Qi.
“Clang—”
With a sharp screech, two long swords collided with tremendous speed, and then flew out of their hands, embedding into the walls.
“Wow, this is way too intense…” Bai Liu, drenched in cold sweat, ducked aside, his heart pounding in his chest.
He had almost been accidentally injured! Thankfully, his reflexes were quick!
Ye Xue stood in front of Yu Qi, preparing for another attack.
Seeing both of them no longer wielding their magical swords, Ye Yangyun smiled and said, “Come on, my good disciple, let me see how much you’ve improved during this time.”
He raised his hand and chanted, “All things reborn.”
Bai Liu felt something wriggling beneath his feet, and by the time he tried to move, it was already too late. Numerous vines rapidly emerged from the ground, moving as if alive, and immediately entangled him.
“Damn!” Bai Liu was soon bound up into a ball by the vines, unable to move. He couldn’t help but complain, “Even if I curse you, it shouldn’t be this extreme! I’m just speaking the truth!”
“When is it ever the time for trash talk!” Xu Zhou felt a vein pop in his forehead as he cursed and swung his sword to slash at the vines coming toward him.
“Hehehe…”
“Watch out—” Bai Zi’ang suddenly changed his expression.
The vicious ghosts, laughing, hid behind the vines, waiting for the right moment, their long claws reaching out.
It was hard to fight against so many, and Xu Zhou narrowly avoided the attack, but the vines surged forward, piercing through his chest.
“Ugh—” he grunted, then forcefully cut through the vines, pushing his sword into the ground, and spitting out blood.
“Senior Brother!” Bai Liu was horrified, struggling to break free.
Bai Zi’ang quickly pushed back the ghosts and vines in front of him and rushed over to support him.
…
Ye Xue, watching the chaos of the plants, recalled the Five Elements Theory they had learned in the past.
Metal overcomes wood.
She bit her finger, squeezed out some blood, and drew a symbol in the air: “Turn stone into gold!”
Instantly, the stones on the ground turned into shining gold, and the vines that touched them dissolved into water.
Bai Liu, who had been trapped by the vines, fell heavily to the ground after losing his support.
Xu Zhou’s blood, which had been soaking his chest, turned into droplets, and the wound disappeared.
With his master’s support, he patted his chest, breathing a sigh of relief.
It turned out to be just an illusion.
Yu Qi slowly calmed his breath and steadied himself.
He took Ye Xue’s hand, then recited, “The stars spread the fire.”
In an instant, the temperature around them became scorching. First, small sparks appeared, slowly merging with the gold, which then turned into a fierce flame. A golden dragon appeared in the flames, letting out a long roar before swiftly darting toward Ye Yangyun.
The flames engulfed his figure, also swallowing the surrounding black mist.
Ye Xue, seeing Bai Zi’ang still entangled with the vicious ghosts, squeezed out more blood and quickly drew a blood symbol in the air, tossing it toward them.
The blood symbol transformed into a blood net, trapping the vicious ghosts inside.
They let out painful wails, trying to break through, but were bounced back.
Bai Liu ran over, ready to attach the soul-capturing ropes to them, but the fire around them suddenly died down.
The black mist completely dissipated, and one figure remained standing in the center, completely unharmed.
He sighed lightly, “Mr. Yu, you truly live up to the saying ‘When one does not speak, it is as though nothing has been heard, but when one speaks, it shocks all.’”
Ye Yangyun paced, broke off a willow branch, and tapped it on the ground, “Water, come.”
With a soft “drip,” a drop of dew slid from the willow leaf and fell to the ground.
Ye Xue sensed something was wrong and pulled Yu Qi away.
Water-formed ice pillars shot up from where they stood, scattering water droplets that extinguished the flames. One of the sharp ice pillars pierced Yu Qi’s arm, unlike the illusion Xu Zhou had encountered earlier. The ice felt cold to the touch, freezing half of his arm in an instant.
“Earth cover!” Ye Xue placed her hand on Yu Qi’s arm, summoning earth to cover it.
The ice cracked with a crisp sound as it shattered.
An Zhuo and Chen Su hid in a secluded spot, watching the battle unfold, anxious but unable to help.
They saw the two unattended magical swords not far away and knew Ye Xue would need them, so they rushed over at the right moment.
“Master Ye!”
Ye Xue looked back, shocked to see An Zhuo and Chen Su braving the danger of being consumed by the black mist, rushing to grab the Evil-Slaying Sword.
The magical swords naturally countered the vicious ghosts and the male and female Evil-Slaying Swords were even more effective against spirits.
The two ghosts, enduring the sting of being burned by the swords, struggled to pull them out.
“Ah!” Chen Su’s soul began to turn transparent, her hands being burned by golden light.
Yet she paid no mind to the pain as she forcefully pulled out both swords.
“Master, catch!” They threw the swords to Ye Xue with all their strength.
