Xue Ran wasn’t dead—Feng Guang had suspected it for some time. If he were truly gone, the system would have declared her mission a failure and forcibly transported her out of this world. She had forced herself not to dwell on this thought, choosing to believe he was dead. But now that Dan Ya had spoken it aloud, her feelings became an inexpressible tangle of complexity, leaving her unsure of what to think.
Dan Ya continued, “He has a habit of using poison to control people. Guan Yueyue is poisoned by him, and so is Nangong Li, and even I haven’t escaped it. The only difference is, I figured it out early on, while they remain in the dark.”
Hearing this, Mu Liunian’s expression also darkened. “We’re hoping to find that boy, Qing Yu, to see if he can help Dan Ya detoxify. Do you think he can?”
“This matter… you’ll have to discuss it with Qing Yu. He’s in the kitchen right now, brewing medicine.”
After giving them directions to the kitchen, Feng Guang walked away on her own, heading toward her room. She rubbed her temples, feeling an unbearable headache, mixed with a bitter sense of irony.
The elixir of immortality… So many people had died for such a laughable goal. What made it even more absurd was that every time she thought of him, the image that came to mind was his gentle and kind demeanor. How could someone like that possibly be associated with madness and cruelty?
As she turned a corner, faint sobbing caught her attention. Following the sound, she saw a maid crying in the shadows while another maid tried to console her.
“Stop crying, please! What if the Master hears you?”
“Sister, my cat… Why does the Master want it killed? And why… why does he want me to do it myself? Didn’t he say he liked this cat and told me to take good care of it?”
The sobbing maid held something wrapped in gray cloth. The cloth didn’t completely cover it, and one corner revealed a skinned cat’s paw…
“Ugh!” Feng Guang clamped her hand over her mouth and ran for a long while before collapsing under a tree. Unable to hold it in, she vomited violently.
Behind her, a voice as soft as a ghost’s whispered, “Miss Xia?”
A handkerchief was offered to her. She took it and wiped her mouth clean after finishing, leaning weakly against the tree. Turning back, she saw him and spoke faintly, “Master.”
“What’s wrong?”
The horrific scene she had just witnessed came to mind, but she swallowed the words back down. “I… I’ve been feeling nauseous lately because I’m pregnant.”
“Pregnant?” Dongfang Ye appeared momentarily stunned.
Feng Guang felt a bit awkward. “Forget I said anything.”
Dongfang Ye lowered his gaze and asked softly, “Miss Xia… are you planning to keep the child?”
“I don’t know…” Feng Guang rested her hand on her abdomen. “I can’t decide.”
“Miss Xia, forgive my bluntness, but you’re still young. Even if you decide not to keep this child, it’s understandable.”
Feng Guang forced a stiff smile. “I’ll think it over slowly. Master, I’m feeling unwell, so I’ll take my leave.”
She took a step away but then paused. “Master, sometimes I get bored. Would it be possible for me to borrow some books from your study?”
“Of course.” Dongfang Ye’s sudden smile was as radiant as a pear tree in full bloom, pure and mesmerizing. “I’ll inform the guards at the entrance. You’re welcome to visit whenever you like.”
“Thank you, Master.”
Feng Guang turned and walked away at an unhurried pace, her steps calm and steady as usual. Yet, she could still feel his faint, lingering gaze on her back. Pretending not to notice, she asked the system in her mind, “Tell me, is he Xue Ran?”
After a long pause, the system replied, “Yes.”
She closed her eyes in pain.
I knew it hahaahahahahah
