Xue Ran chuckled lightly. “Senior Sun, are you here to join the excitement too?”
Sun Yidao replied, “With so many people involved, how could I not step in? But there’s one thing I don’t understand. You’re only twenty-eight this year, yet the previous leader of the Demonic Sect would be over forty by now. Xue Ran, you don’t look like someone in their forties.”
“If you can’t figure it out, let it go. The more you know, the quicker you die,” Xue Ran said as his whip suddenly snapped into action.
Under the guidance of his inner strength, the whip seemed almost alive as it unraveled from the sword and lashed toward Sun Yidao’s back.
Sun Yidao quickly leaped backward to dodge it. After several exchanges, he realized he was entirely on the defensive within Xue Ran’s carefully constructed web of attacks. Feinting a strike to create an opening, he retreated a few steps to catch his breath and shouted, “You two, leave now and find Dongfang Ye!”
Feng Guang protested, “But you—”
“We’re going!” Qing Yu interrupted, grabbing her hand and pulling her away before she could finish.
As someone trained in martial arts, Qing Yu could see more clearly than Feng Guang that Sun Yidao was completely overpowered. The man hailed as the greatest swordsman in the world stood no chance against Xue Ran. The sight shocked and terrified Qing Yu. Xue Ran had never displayed such mastery of the whip before, and Qing Yu could only imagine how many more hidden tricks this man possessed. Before Sun Yidao was killed, Qing Yu had to find reinforcements.
Seeing this, Guan Yueyue gritted her teeth, hoisted the gravely injured Nangong Li onto her back, and struggled to carry him away from the battlefield.
No one paid them any attention.
Qing Yu and Feng Guang quickly disappeared into the night. Suddenly, Xue Ran let out a short laugh, his smile laced with a strangely enchanting tenderness. He spoke slowly, “A mere sixty-year-old child, yet I’ve called you ‘senior’ for so many years. Did you think your experience outranked mine, Sun Yidao? Since you won’t behave, I don’t need to hold back.”
A chill surged through Sun Yidao’s heart.
Meanwhile, Qing Yu led Feng Guang toward Dongfang Ye’s estate. Though he had never met Dongfang Ye, he knew the man lived in the most luxurious residence on the mountain. That place was brightly lit every night, filled with the sounds of music and revelry, and guarded by the elite swordsmen of the valley. Most importantly, Dongfang Ye would never tolerate anyone disturbing the peace of the valley.
That very night, the leader of the swordsmen, Zhijian, was on patrol. Seeing Qing Yu and Feng Guang being stopped at the gates, and noticing their anxious expressions, Zhijian approached and asked, “Madam Xue, Qing Yu, what has happened?”
Panting, Feng Guang replied, “Xue Ran’s identity as a member of the Demonic Sect has been exposed! He’s trying to kill Senior Sun, and Senior Sun is in danger. Hurry and save him!”
Zhijian didn’t hesitate. Waving to his men, he ordered, “Quick, follow me!”
A group of swordsmen immediately dashed off using their light-footed martial arts. Feng Guang, exhausted, slumped against the gate, covering her face with her hands. Her shoulders shook, but no sound came from her.
“Master’s wife,” Qing Yu said softly as he sat beside her. Those two words were all he could think to say, though he struggled to process the situation.
It was the first time Feng Guang had heard him call her “Master’s wife,” but she found it deeply ironic. Her voice broke as she said, “Don’t call me that… I don’t want anything to do with him anymore.”
“I understand,” Qing Yu replied, his expression darkening.
“Qing Yu… Senior Sun will be okay, right? He’s the greatest swordsman in the world. He wouldn’t die so easily, would he?”
“Yes…” Qing Yu said, almost as if trying to convince himself. “Senior Sun will be fine.”
But Feng Guang found no comfort in his words. She murmured, “System, why didn’t you tell me that he was the one who destroyed my family?”
“I told you to accelerate your departure from this world, but you refused,” the system replied.
All of this could have been avoided.
