Chapter 46: Six Hundred Thousand Dollars
As the traffic increased, the highway became very congested, and the bus that Ye Xue was on would frequently come to a stop.
After being disturbed from her sleep, she found it hard to fall back asleep and felt somewhat lethargic.
Ye Xue turned her head to look out the window. She noticed some bloodstains on the glass, which stood out against the clear material. They were likely remnants from the ghost they had encountered earlier.
When the driver made a turn onto a less crowded road, the bus resumed normal operation, no longer stopping and starting constantly.
Before long, light rain began to fall outside, washing the bloodstains off the window clean.
Noticing Ye Xue lost in thought while staring outside, Yu Qi handed her one of his earphones and asked, “Do you want to listen to music?”
Ye Xue rarely played with her phone on the bus because the battery drained quickly, and she hardly listened to music while traveling.
She stared at the earphones for a couple of seconds, then nodded lightly and took them, placing them in her ears.
The song was melodious and beautiful, but Ye Xue couldn’t quite understand the lyrics—it seemed to be in French.
Yu Qi noticed that she hadn’t said much since getting on the bus, and the dark eyes visible above her mask looked somewhat listless, so he quietly asked, “Are you feeling carsick?”
Ye Xue nodded slowly, “I tend to feel sick on buses.”
After saying this, she resumed looking at the scenery outside, trying to shake off the discomfort, and she didn’t notice that Yu Qi had quietly left his seat.
When he returned with a bottle of water and motion sickness pills, she finally snapped back to reality.
Yu Qi opened the bottle of water for her and handed her the pills, instructing, “I asked the attendant, and this medicine is effective for motion sickness. You should try it.”
Ye Xue took the pills, and five minutes later, the uncomfortable feeling finally dissipated.
Yu Qi watched her nervously and asked with concern, “How do you feel now?”
After taking a sip of water, her eyes sparkled again, reminiscent of the night sky. She smiled, “I feel much better now.”
Seeing her regain her spirits eased Yu Qi’s worries.
It could have been the effect of the motion sickness medicine, but not long after taking the pills, fatigue crept back in.
Just before she could truly fall asleep, a scratching sound at the window startled her awake. She looked up and saw a blurry ghost hovering outside the window, ominously staring at them.
Even through the glass, Ye Xue could smell the ghost’s overwhelming aura of darkness.
It seemed to be another ghost that had escaped from the Ronggui Well.
Yu Qi glanced outside as well. Upon noticing the ghost, he furrowed his brow and said, “Its aura feels somewhat similar to the one we just caught.”
Ye Xue withdrew her gaze but didn’t pay much attention to the ghost. Instead, she smiled at Yu Qi and asked, “Is that the one that just crashed in?”
Yu Qi was taken aback for a moment before joining her in laughter. “Yeah, that’s the one that crashed in.”
The ghost, seeing that the only two people who could see it were ignoring it, felt its authority as a ghost being challenged. Its eyes turned red, and it coldly smiled, extending its pale hand to heavily slap against the bus window. As it did so, its long fingernails scratched deeply against the glass, leaving several marks behind.
Ye Xue frowned at the sight and, just as the ghost thought it had finally scared them, she puzzledly asked, “What if the attendant sees the glass is scratched? Will they make us pay for it?”
After all, the window had been fine before they boarded, but now it was damaged.
The atmosphere, which had been tense, immediately relaxed. Yu Qi fell silent for a moment and then hesitantly replied, “I don’t think so. After all, the scratches are on the outside.”
That made sense.
Ye Xue felt reassured. “Oh, then it’s no problem.”
“I have a problem.” The ghost didn’t open its mouth, yet a chilling voice seemed to come from nowhere. “Do you think I can’t get in?”
It appeared confident that they thought it couldn’t enter.
Yu Qi glanced at it.
Meanwhile, Ye Xue yawned and casually said, “Uh-huh, come on in!”
She wouldn’t be able to catch it from outside.
Seeing Ye Xue and Yu Qi so calm, the ghost felt that its fearsome presence was being provoked and became even angrier.
It had come from far away, drawn by the scent of the person who attracted wandering souls. Although it didn’t know what it was, it instinctively believed that if it devoured him, its powers would greatly increase, making it invincible even against the ghost messengers.
“Humans die for wealth; birds die for food.”
It wiped its face with its hand, smearing more blood across its features. Its once pale hands were now stained with blood, and even maggots were wriggling on them.
Ye Xue was immediately repulsed. “Oh my God!”
Seeing Ye Xue finally show a look of “fear,” the ghost becomes satisfied. It licked the maggots from the corner of its mouth and swallowed them, then grinned at the two of them, pressing its face against the window, preparing to pass through.
Ye Xue no longer had the stomach to continue watching. Initially, she wanted to ask where it had come from, but the ghost was simply too disgusting.
In a flash, she pulled out dozens of talismans from her backpack to deal with it.
As soon as the ghost tried to come in, it was met with a talisman that weighed it down like a mountain, causing it to crash to the ground with a scream, expelling the maggots it had swallowed.
“!!!” If Ye Xue hadn’t remembered that they were in a public place, she would have screamed in disgust.
Fortunately, most people on the bus were asleep, and no one noticed what was happening.
Yu Qi worked in tandem with Ye Xue, pulling out a bottle and, reaching over her, trapping the light-as-paper ghost in it.
The ghost was covered in blood and grime, with maggots squirming on its clothes. Even with great care, Yu Qi’s fingers still got stained, but he acted as if he didn’t see it at all and calmly sealed the bottle.
Once it was inside, the blood and maggots on the ground instantly disappeared, as if nothing had ever happened.
Realizing this, Ye Xue said, “So it was an illusion.”
Some ghosts would use illusions to scare people, feeding off the fear of humans.
Ye Xue looked at Yu Qi curiously and asked, “Did you know it was an illusion?”
Yu Qi shook his head. “I didn’t know.”
However, he had encountered more terrifying spirits before, so what was happening now wasn’t anything significant for him.
Ye Xue placed the bottle containing the ghost next to the one from earlier and couldn’t help but marvel, “We’ve caught two now.”
Two hundred thousand.
It was indeed a good experience to make money while going out.
Ye Xue tightened her grip on the blanket, intending to rest again, but outside the window came another series of “bang, bang, bang” sounds against the glass.
Turning her head to look, she saw a pair of bloody eyes at the window.
Another ghost had come.
…
“Bang, bang, bang—”
When the sound occurred again, Ye Xue was no longer surprised. She skillfully took the bottle, affixed a talisman, and swiftly trapped the ghost inside in a fluid motion.
Counting the bottles in front of her, she murmured, “One, two, three… six. Huh? Six of them…”
As the traffic increased, the highway became very congested, and the bus that Ye Xue was on had to stop frequently.
After being jolted awake, she found it hard to fall back asleep and felt somewhat sluggish.
Ye Xue turned her head to look out the window, noticing a few bloodstains on the glass, which stood out against the transparent material. It must have come from the malevolent spirit that had brushed against it earlier.
When the driver took a turn and switched to a lane with noticeably less traffic, the bus finally resumed a normal pace, no longer stopping and starting repeatedly.
Time passed, and soon a light rain began to fall outside. The raindrops washed against the window, clearing away the previous bloodstains.
Yu Qi noticed that Ye Xue was staring out of the window in a daze. He thought for a moment, then pulled out one of his earbuds and offered it to her, asking, “Do you want to listen to some music?”
Ye Xue’s phone battery drained quickly, so she rarely used it on the bus, especially to listen to music.
She stared at the earbud for a couple of seconds, nodded slightly, reached out to take it, and put it in her ear.
The melody was enchanting, but Ye Xue struggled to understand the lyrics; it seemed to be a song in French.
Noticing that she hadn’t said much since getting on the bus, Yu Qi quietly asked, “Are you feeling carsick?”
Ye Xue nodded slowly, saying, “I get carsick when I take the bus.”
After saying that, Ye Xue turned her gaze back to the scenery outside, trying to push through the discomfort, not paying attention to the movements around her, nor did she realize that Yu Qi had discreetly left his seat.
When Yu Qi returned with a bottle of water and motion sickness medication, she finally snapped back to reality.
Yu Qi opened the water bottle for her and handed her the medicine, advising, “I asked the attendant, and this medication is very effective for motion sickness. You should give it a try.”
After taking the medicine, Ye Xue felt the discomfort fade away five minutes later.
Yu Qi watched her nervously and asked, “How do you feel?”
Ye Xue took a sip of water, her dark eyes shining again like a night sky, and smiled, “I feel much better now.”
Seeing her regain her energy, Yu Qi finally relaxed.
Maybe it was the effect of the motion sickness medication; shortly after taking it, sleepiness washed over Ye Xue again.
However, before she could fall asleep, a scratching sound against the window startled her awake. Looking up, she saw a vague, shadowy figure hovering outside the window, coldly staring at them.
Even through the glass, Ye Xue could sense the chilling aura emanating from it.
It looked like another spirit that had escaped from the ghost well.
