“Hey, still studying hard, huh?” Wen Shi entered with her arms crossed, looking down at the girl seated at the desk. She glanced at the textbook with a wicked smile in her eyes.
Qing Li stopped writing, turned her chair around, and rested her hands on the backrest. She smiled back, “Yeah, I have no choice. My grades are so good that the teacher gave me extra work for advanced training.”
Wen Shi’s expression shifted, jealousy flashing briefly in her eyes as she stared at Qing Li intensely. In a low voice, she threatened, “Are you going to disobey me? Do you believe that I can have Grandpa kick you out?”
Qing Li’s heart tightened, and she bit her lip, staying silent.
Wen Shi smiled smugly. After all these years of training, while she might not be able to control others, handling Fu Qing Li was easy. She continued, “You idiot! Did you dare to hit me today? Who gave you the courage?! Remember, whenever you see me, you better steer clear!”
Qing Li replied quietly, “Why should I avoid you?”
“…” Wen Shi was momentarily speechless. “Because you’re adopted. You should be scared of me! But it’s fine if you don’t listen. After all, you’re stupid and useless. I’ll just ask Grandpa to get rid of you!”
“It doesn’t matter. I’m almost an adult. I won’t need to be adopted anymore,” Qing Li said.
Wen Shi sneered. Ah, so that’s why she had the nerve to defy her and her mom today! She hadn’t expected her usual tactics to fail this time. Just as she was about to give up, she glanced at the exercises on the desk. After a quick look, they appeared as complex as a foreign language. She remembered high school textbooks being tough, but not this difficult.
She thought to herself, “She probably can’t solve these at all.”
Wen Shi shot Qing Li a glance, her voice sharp and condescending. “Where did these come from? Are you having these problems? You must have gotten a lot wrong! After all, you’re dumb and bad at school. How do you even dare to try these Olympiad questions?”
But Qing Li responded in confusion, “But my grades are really good…”
Wen Shi gritted her teeth, her tone more forceful, “No, they’re not! Not good at all! You hate studying! You’re dumb, remember? I’m two years younger than you, and you can’t even solve my problems!”
Qing Li stubbornly replied, “I can solve them!”
Wen Shi: “???”
She was so enraged that her breathing became heavier. This had always worked before. She was using the method her dad had taught her! After years of belittling Fu Qing Li, she had truly become a fool. How could she be resisting now?
Wen Shi clenched her face, saying, “I said you can’t, so you can’t!”
“And who are you to decide that?” Qing Li asked.
Wen Shi froze for two seconds, her eyes widening. Finally, she realized that something was different about Fu Qing Li this time. Although she seemed timid on the surface, her eyes remained clear and bright, unlike the dullness Wen Shi had grown accustomed to.
“What’s going on with you?” Wen Shi asked in shock.
Qing Li smiled slightly, but in the next second, her smile vanished. She placed one foot firmly on the ground, locking her chair in place, then suddenly raised her other foot and kicked Wen Shi.
With a loud “bang,” Wen Shi fell hard on the floor, her face turning red as she angrily tried to get up. But before she could, Qing Li approached, and just as Wen Shi stood up, Qing Li kicked her again.
“Ah!” Wen Shi screamed in pain. She finally realized that her usual psychological manipulation had failed, and Fu Qing Li was fully aware of her actions—and ready for revenge.
Faced with this new version of Fu Qing Li, Wen Shi couldn’t even muster the will to fight back. She scrambled desperately, trying to flee the room, but the door was locked from when she entered. She fumbled with the lock, but just as she unlocked the door and before she could turn the knob, she felt a sharp pain in her back. A hand grabbed the back of her neck and slammed her against the door, pressing her face tightly to the cold surface.
Qing Li’s chilling voice came from behind, “Impressive! You’ve been undermining my confidence since we were kids. After all these years, you’re still persistent!”
Wen Shi’s face went pale. She hurriedly denied it, “I didn’t! You’re just dumb! You couldn’t even solve a problem meant for younger students!”
“Ah!” Wen Shi doubled over in pain as Qing Li kicked her in the stomach again. Watching her stumble backward in agony, Qing Li coldly replied, “That problem back then wasn’t even meant for your grade level!”
“I won’t do it again! I won’t! Please spare me! Waaaah…” Wen Shi sobbed, trembling with fear, her back drenched in cold sweat.
Qing Li sneered, “You? Not dare? Wen Shi, you’re something else. Even as a kid, you were already misguiding me…”
After contacting Xu Nianhan, Qing Li reflected on Wen Shi’s behavior. It all came back to Wen Shi’s father, Pei Qi’s husband, a master of psychological manipulation who had been gaslighting Pei Qi.
In her previous life memories, the original Qing Li recalled how Pei Qi loved her husband more than anything. She even stole the Pei family’s secrets—namely, the unmanned driving technology linked to Lin Hengzhi—just to fulfill his wishes.
Of course, she failed, and it was the girl Pei Xi Yue liked who exposed the truth, earning the Pei family’s favor.
Afterward, the Pei family forcibly brought Pei Qi back and made her divorce. Her husband ended up in jail, and Wen Shi returned with her mother. But Pei Qi, devastated by the loss of her husband, tried to commit suicide several times.
Wen Shi hated the girl who had broken up her parents’ marriage and looked down on her, though her fate was slightly better than that of the original Qing Li.
Wen Shi had likely picked up a few psychological tricks from her father, deliberately asking Qing Li questions she hadn’t learned yet. When Qing Li couldn’t answer, Wen Shi would call her stupid. Qing Li, already sensitive from living as an outsider in the Pei family, began to doubt herself.
On the surface, the Pei family treated Qing Li well—with lavish clothes and everything—making others envious, thinking she was treated like their own daughter.
But only she knew the Pei family’s coldness toward her. She once believed it was her fault, and Wen Shi’s presence amplified that feeling. Qing Li truly thought she was stupid and unworthy of affection.
As a result, she became more insecure. Though she listened in class, she could no longer solve the problems.
Wen Shi’s motive was ridiculous: in elementary school, the original Qing Li’s grades had been excellent. Wen Shi, two years younger, was constantly compared to her by Pei Qi, who would say she couldn’t even outperform an adopted child. It wasn’t until junior high, when Qing Li’s grades began to drop, that the comparisons stopped.
In high school, Qing Li was even bullied, which doubled the effect, making her the underperforming student she was when Qing Li first absorbed her memories. If not for the Pei family’s substantial donation, she wouldn’t have been able to attend this elite high school.
Those memories had been gradually erased through years of manipulation, leading the original Qing Li to believe it was all her fault.
But before all this, she had loved math. After learning physics, she loved that too. Her talent in these areas was exceptional, and she could grasp concepts easily. Her elementary school essay about wanting to be a scientist had even been featured in the city’s outstanding student essays.
Yet Wen Shi had effortlessly destroyed this brilliant talent that others envied.
Listening to Qing Li’s increasingly cold tone, Wen Shi was filled with terror. She turned and tried to run, but Qing Li quickly caught up, pinning her against the wall near the door.
This time, Wen Shi was truly terrified, completely unable to resist. Clutching the door with both hands, she screamed, “Mom! Mom! Help! Fu Qingli is going to kill me!”
The room was well-insulated against sound, but her shrieking was impossible to ignore.
Soon enough, Pei Qi came rushing over, accompanied by other footsteps.
Qingli knew that as soon as people arrived, she wouldn’t be able to do anything, even if she had the upper hand. So, she grabbed Wen Shi by the head, lifted it slightly, and slammed it hard against the door.
Bang! Wen Shi immediately felt a burning pain on her forehead, followed by dizziness. Before she could react, another bang came, then another, bang! bang!
“Ahhh…” Wen Shi cried out, her voice growing weaker and weaker. She could barely cry anymore, her head spinning like it was trapped in a high-speed washing machine. She had no strength left to fight back, only an overwhelming fear of the demon holding her down.
She’s terrifying!
Fu Qingli was a devil!
“Let go of my daughter!” Pei Qi was horrified by the sounds inside the room, pounding on the door in panic, afraid her daughter would be killed by this madwoman.
Qingli ignored her, each hit harder than the last. Only after she had vented some of the original owner’s pent-up anger did she finally let go.
Wen Shi collapsed to the floor, the hardwood sending another wave of pain through her as she began sobbing uncontrollably.
At that moment, the door burst open, revealing Pei Qi’s twisted face as she rushed in to attack. “You wretched girl! How dare you hit Shi Shi! Even the heavens won’t save you this time!”
Qingli took a step back, catching Pei Qi’s hand just as it aimed for her hair. She grabbed both of Pei Qi’s wrists and twisted them sharply.
