Late at night, with nothing to do, Ye Xue started chatting with her roommates.
The three of them were chatting enthusiastically from behind their bed curtains.
When girls are in their dorms, there are always plenty of common topics to discuss.
At first, they only talked about their high school romances, but the conversation slowly shifted from typical “late-night talks” to a more serious “late-night” topic.
Wei Caining began telling them about a paranormal experience her relatives had gone through.
Gao Lan immediately grabbed a pillow to hold onto for comfort, looking both scared yet eager to listen.
Ye Xue remembered the taboo about talking about ghosts at night. She initially thought to warn them not to bring up spirits so casually in the evening but then thought it might spoil the fun. Besides, with her and her demon-slaying sword here, no wandering ghosts would dare come near.
So, she let them continue.
Wei Caining cleared her throat and began, “This happened to my uncle…”
“Two years ago, he went back to the countryside for a memorial service. He heard that a nearby village had invited a theater troupe to perform, so he joined in to watch. By the time he returned, it was already midnight, and while walking home, he passed by a desolate mountain. Suddenly, he heard someone crying for help. My uncle was about to run over to save them, but then the protective talisman he was wearing around his neck suddenly heated up, burning him and snapping him back to his senses. He looked carefully and realized he had unknowingly wandered to the edge of a river. He was just inches away from falling into the water. But the most terrifying thing was…”
Wei Caining paused, lowering her voice dramatically. “The person was standing on the water’s surface, but there was no reflection beneath them!”
“Holy crap!!” Gao Lan screamed out loud in shock at the final twist.
Ye Xue wasn’t scared by Wei Caining’s ghost story, but she was almost startled by Gao Lan’s loud reaction.
Wei Caining chuckled awkwardly, “Lan, if you keep shouting like that, the dorm next door will come over to complain. Besides, it’s just a story. My uncle probably made it up to scare me so I wouldn’t play by the river.”
Gao Lan, clutching her stuffed bear, said, “But it’s still really scary!”
Then she turned to Ye Xue and asked, “A’Xue, aren’t you afraid?”
Ye Xue smiled and replied, “Nope. Like Caining said, it’s just a story.”
However, Ye Xue knew that what Wei Caining’s uncle encountered was likely real—a drowned spirit looking for a replacement.
Ye Xue’s calm and steady voice reassured Gao Lan, who quickly relaxed, saying, “You’re right. It’s not like there are that many ghosts in the world.”
“But…” Gao Lan hesitated for a moment before adding, “I’ve heard some seniors mention ghost sightings in the Science Building.”
Science Building?
Ye Xue recalled the red-dressed female ghost she had seen before and asked, “You mean room 404?”
Gao Lan nodded, “Yeah, one of the seniors who showed me around mentioned it. She said that a couple of years ago, when the Science Building wasn’t completely abandoned, some couples would go there to hang out, and students who couldn’t find a study room would go there to study. But after going just once, no one dared return. Those who visited always felt a sudden sharp pain in their heads as if someone was hitting them. And at night, there were always strange crying sounds. There were even rumors that a girl from the class of 2014 had jumped from the Science Building. Eventually, everyone thought the place was too creepy, so no one went there anymore. Soon after, the school declared it a dangerous building and restricted access.”
So that’s why she felt uneasy when she saw the woman in red.
Ghosts hitting the back of people’s heads.
Suddenly, that phrase popped into Ye Xue’s mind.
“Science Building?” Wei Caining said, sounding confused. “That’s strange. Lately, I’ve been having dreams of someone making me solve math problems in the Science Building. And the problems are so hard! I can’t solve any of them!”
What Wei Caining mentioned didn’t seem like a big deal to her, but it caught Ye Xue’s attention because it involved the Science Building.
No wonder Wei Caining had been looking so tired recently. At first, Ye Xue thought it was just because she had been staying up late to study. Even when she used her spiritual sight to check, Wei Caining didn’t have any negative energy clinging to her, so Ye Xue hadn’t thought much about it.
Now that Wei Caining mentioned it, Ye Xue planned to check things out later that night after everyone fell asleep.
After chatting for a while longer, the group grew tired, said goodnight, and turned off the lights to sleep.
In the dead of night, Ye Xue was suddenly awakened by some shuffling sounds coming from the bed next to hers. She realized it was coming from Wei Caining’s bed.
Wei Caining had gotten up.
Ye Xue lifted her bed curtain and peeked out, only to see Wei Caining sitting stiffly at the desk, holding a pen. It wasn’t clear what she was doing.
Ye Xue quickly got down to investigate, cautiously asking, “Caining, are you doing homework this late?”
But Wei Caining didn’t respond.
Ye Xue moved closer and realized that Wei Caining wasn’t awake. Her eyes had rolled back, showing only the whites.
Wei Caining was scribbling something on a piece of paper, but as she continued, her face twisted in pain.
It was a clear case of soul displacement!
No wonder Wei Caining kept dreaming about being forced to solve problems and waking up exhausted. It wasn’t a dream at all!
If she hadn’t casually mentioned it tonight, Ye Xue wouldn’t have noticed anything was wrong.
Ye Xue gently helped her roommate back into bed, covered her with a blanket, and placed a talisman on her.
The talisman would calm her mind and prevent outside interference, allowing her to sleep peacefully.
Ye Xue then grabbed her demon-slaying sword and headed to the Science Building to find Wei Caining’s displaced soul.
The night wind was chilly, and the temperature had dropped significantly from the day. The surroundings were pitch black, with only a few streetlights providing some illumination.
The school grounds were barely visible, but Ye Xue still remembered the way to the Science Building and walked in the darkness toward room 404.
One of the classrooms in room 404 was lit, and noisy voices echoed from inside, making the otherwise silent atmosphere even more eerie.
Ye Xue paused and quietly stared at the dark, cold building.
“Today—we’ll be learning about ordinary differential equations,” a strange woman’s voice suddenly echoed.
Ye Xue stopped in her tracks, “?”
Then came the next line: “I’ve given you the assignment. No one is allowed to leave until it’s done.”
Ye Xue was stunned. “???”
It was actually about making them solve problems.
Who would’ve thought this ghost had a knack for teaching?
While thinking this, Ye Xue quietly approached the lit-up classroom. Through the window, she saw the red-clad ghost she’d encountered earlier standing at the podium. To her surprise, Wei Caining wasn’t the only one seated in the classroom—there was another person.
Ye Xue was puzzled for a moment. That other figure seemed familiar, but she didn’t dwell on it. Gripping the door handle, she opened the classroom door.
With a loud bang, Ye Xue burst into the room, sword in hand, facing the ghost at the podium.
The ghost froze, chalk in hand, and turned her head towards Ye Xue, her gaze cold. Neither of them spoke.
The classroom fell into a tense silence.
Then a familiar voice broke it: “Sob… Shishu (Martial Aunt)! Have you come to rescue me?!”
Bai Liu, biting on his pen, looked pained as he pleaded to Ye Xue, “Help me! I can’t solve these problems! I don’t understand any of them!!”
Before Ye Xue could respond, the ghost cast him a frosty glance and snapped, “What’s the use of you? You get four out of five problems wrong. Even a high school student could do better. If you can’t finish them, you’ll stay here with me until they’re done.”
What?! Stay with her? How could anyone be so cruel?
Bai Liu was horrified. “You’re out of your mind!”
Wei Caining was still racking her brain, trying to solve her problem. She felt hazy, aware she was likely dreaming, but the dream felt too real. Even the way the teacher berated them for needing to stay in class sounded eerily familiar.
When she heard the door open, Wei Caining lifted her head, delighted to see Ye Xue. “Ah, Xue! Are you here to do the problems with me?!”
The ghost casually tossed her chalk onto the podium with a sneer, “No, not everyone is as hopeless as you.”
Wei Caining: “???”
Here it was again—another painfully familiar scenario.
Ye Xue, however, found herself speechless.
This wasn’t quite what she’d expected. She’d braced herself for a battle with a fierce red-clad ghost, fully prepared for a deadly showdown. But this ghost, though she exuded an ominous aura, wasn’t filled with malice. In fact…
She was just making them solve problems.
With this realization, Ye Xue walked into the classroom, all while being observed by the ghost. The ghost merely stared coldly at her but didn’t take any further action.
Ye Xue reached into her sleeve, attempting to use a talisman to send them back, but found that it didn’t work. She couldn’t get Wei Caining out.
Seeing the lingering aura around the ghost, Ye Xue began to understand.
The ghost was too attached to her obsessions. Unless she willingly let them go, Ye Xue wouldn’t be able to help Bai Liu and Wei Caining leave.
Her only option would be to confront her directly.
But how could she get the ghost to release them?
Recalling the ghost’s earlier scolding of Bai Liu, Ye Xue suddenly had an idea. She spoke up, “Wait, I’d like to solve problems too.”
Bai Liu, sensing her intent, immediately felt a wave of relief. He was saved!
These math problems were impossible!
Ye Xue walked to the desk, and Wei Caining scooted over to make space, still perplexed by how vivid her dream was. Not only was she solving problems, but now Ye Xue had joined her.
