Arc 1: Silly Girl (75)

Huo Lindong listened quietly. He didn’t know what Jiang Baozong’s intention was in telling him about these past events, but he was indeed very interested in Ah Wu’s past events, so he was listening very attentively.

“When the doctor told me that Ah Wu had a brain disease and might be stupid for the rest of his life, Ah Wu was about to be four years old. I locked myself up for three whole days.”

“In addition to regret and guilt, I had been thinking about a question, that is, what should I do and how should I take care of Ah Wu, this child.”

If Jiang Wu was healthy, Jiang Baozong would teach her to read and write and hire the best female master to teach her chess, calligraphy, and painting.

Of course, if Jiang Wu didn’t want to learn from Jiang Baozong, Jiang Baozong wouldn’t force her. As long as Ah Wu was happy all her life, those skills were not mandatory.

But, Jiang Wu was a fool.

It was very likely that she would never think like a normal person throughout her life. She would always be just an ignorant child who could not speak clearly or remember things.

How should Jiang Baozong teach such a daughter so that he can let go of her with confidence in the future?

“I taught Ah Wu to eat by herself, but Ah Wu learned very slowly. After more than a year, she still couldn’t learn to use chopsticks and scattered the food everywhere.”

“I taught Ah Wu to rinse her mouth, and she always swallowed the salt water that she gargled with and then smiled at me stupidly. At that time, I was worried because my Ah Wu was so stupid. What should she do if no one takes care of her in the future?”

It was not an easy task to teach a child who was judged to be a fool by doctors. During the process of teaching Jiang Wu, Jiang Baozong wanted to give up several times. He often asked himself why he tortured himself and his daughter so much.

With the financial resources of the Jiang family, he could buy several maids for his daughter to help her dress, bathe her, feed her, and wipe her mouth after every meal.

Her daughter was so stupid, and she didn’t need to be literate. Anyway, so many girls in the countryside were also illiterate.

“I spent more than ten years teaching Ah Wu to dress, wash, and eat by herself. Others said that Ah Wu is stupid, but now Ah Wu has learned 109 words, and she will learn more in the future.”

“Even if she, Jiang Baozong’s daughter, is a fool, she can still stretch out her hand to wear clothes and open her mouth to eat by herself. But you have to know, Lindong, that first, Ah Wu is Ah Wu, an independent person, and secondly, Ah Wu is my daughter and your wife.”

A person must first have basic life skills and basic thinking abilities. These were things that the fool Jiang Wu did not have, but it was what Jiang Baozong spent more than ten years to let her have them.

This was the humblest wish of a guilty father. He hoped that his Ah Wu could live an ordinary life, even if it took a lot of energy and took a long time.

“Do you know how scared I was today when I saw you feeding Ah Wu and asking for nothing from her? I was afraid that you would pamper Ah Wu for one, five, ten, or twenty years. I’m afraid that your pampered Ah Wu will forget what I spent more than ten years teaching her. When you don’t want to pamper her, my Ah Wu won’t be able to eat or dress by herself. What should she do at that time?”

Seeing that Huo Lindong wanted to refute, Jiang Baozong raised his hand to stop him.

“You don’t have to promise me. In my opinion, promises are the weakest. I am naturally grateful that you can take care of Ah Wu for the rest of your life. However, if you treat Ah Wu like a cat or a dog, teasing her when you love her, and kicking her away when you don’t love her, no matter whether I am dead or alive, I will never let you go.”

“Lindong, you have to remember that Ah Wu is a human being, not a forbidden creature that you have complete control over and whose emotions and joys are controlled by you.”

Just by Huo Lindong’s action of feeding Ah Wu, Jiang Baozong felt his extraordinary desire for control. This was a good thing and a bad thing.

Fortunately, he had a desire to control Ah Wu, which meant that he had Ah Wu in his heart. Regardless of whether he liked her or something else, he at least took Ah Wu into his heart.

The bad thing was that the degree of this desire for control was unknown.

Jiang Baozong was afraid that Huo Lindong just regarded Ah Wu as an interesting possession. When he likes it, he will treat it very rarely, and when he doesn’t like it, he will kick it away.

He was also afraid that he would care too much about this possession, change Ah Wu according to his own preferences, and train Ah Wu into a puppet who had no thoughts of her own and only lived according to his joys and anger.

    HE’S SUCH A GOOD DAD 😭😭 AND A GOOD MOM 😭😭

  2. serene says:

I don’t think Jiang Wu haas dementia. I know it’s been established in the beginning of the story but her symptoms align a lot more with autism.

Being on the spectrum would explain her being non-verbal til she was 3, being slow to learn social cues, just being slower to develop in general, needing extra care and tools to learn. Whereas dementia would be more regressive over time (tho to be fair, dementia can happen to anyone in the future), rn I’d say that she’s more autistic than demented.

They treat her like a fool, but she’s just happy to thrive in her own world.

  3. Her father never treat her like a fool…./(ㄒoㄒ)/

  4. Yingying says:

THIS. This is how you love and care for a disabled child! You help them learn to do what they’re able to do and allow them the dignity of independence as much as possible. He may make mistakes, but there is no doubt that Mr. Jiang loves his daughter unconditionally. Getting caretakers for every matter would have been easy, but he decided she was worth the effort of teaching c,:
